In a July 31, 2025 update, itch.io said it was restoring public discovery for free adult NSFW content. Under the terms it announced, creators had to set a project’s pricing to “No Payments.” itch.io said paid adult content would return gradually as it continued discussions with payment processors. Those are dated terms, not confirmation of every page’s status today.
What itch.io announced
On July 24, 2025, itch.io said it had deindexed adult NSFW content from public browse and search while it reviewed content and payment-processing requirements. The platform linked the scrutiny to a campaign by Collective Shout concerning content on itch.io and Steam, and said it needed to protect its payment infrastructure. Read itch.io’s update and FAQ.

On July 31, itch.io announced that it was reindexing free adult NSFW content. Its notice said pages had to use the “No Payments” pricing option to qualify. It also said owners of NSFW-tagged pages would need to complete a new content-warning system once it became available. Read the reindexing announcement.
The platform’s July 28 FAQ said it had no fixed timeline for resolving the payment-processor situation. It described stricter age-gating and content classification reviews as immediate priorities.

Deindexed does not necessarily mean removed
In itch.io’s July 31 glossary, “deindexed” meant a page was removed from public search, browse, and recommendations. It did not necessarily mean the project or its files were deleted: the platform said a deindexed project could remain on its creator’s profile and in libraries and collections, with included files still accessible. The July 28 FAQ also said previously purchased projects and projects accessed with download keys would remain available in a user’s library unless the creator removed the page or files.

What “free” meant for creators
The July 31 announcement tied eligibility to the project-level “No Payments” setting. itch.io warned that selecting it would make individually priced files free. It also said the platform did not then support combining owners-only content with a fully free project that had payments disabled. These are the terms itch.io described in July 2025; creators should check their current dashboard instructions before changing a project’s pricing.

The announcement did not say that paid adult projects had already returned. itch.io said paid content would be reintroduced slowly while it continued discussions with processors. It reported that Stripe would not support adult content fitting the definition “content designed for sexual gratification,” and said it was speaking with other processors; it did not announce that it had secured a replacement.
Free projects still have to follow content rules
“No Payments” was not described as an exemption from itch.io’s content policies. In a July 23, 2025 takedown notice, the platform said it prohibited sexualized images or videos of real-life humans, AI-generated imagery designed to resemble photographic content of real people, glorification of sexual violence, and sexualized depictions of minors, minor-presenting people, or suggested minors. Creators who accept payments also need to comply with the acceptable-use policies of the processors serving their accounts. itch.io’s Terms of Service say publishers using its processors are subject to those policies; the terms also allow creators to set their own prices, including making projects free.
What is confirmed—and what is not
The July 2025 announcements establish what itch.io said it would do: reindex qualifying free adult NSFW pages, require the “No Payments” option, and work toward a gradual return for paid content. They do not establish the live indexing status of any individual page, whether the warning system was later completed or how it is enforced, or whether paid adult content and processor arrangements have since changed.

The itch.io Updates archive, checked October 8, 2026, lists the July 2025 NSFW announcements alongside later general platform updates, but the surfaced archive material contains no later dedicated NSFW update. That does not confirm the current status of every page or creator’s payment settings. The July 2025 terms should therefore be read as a dated announcement, not a guarantee of what a specific page can do today.

In its July 2025 FAQ, itch.io described itself as an open user-generated-content platform with over 2 million product pages. It said minimal publishing barriers and unreliable user tagging made a narrow, targeted review difficult. That figure and explanation were the platform’s own statements at the time, not an independently verified current count.
