The announcement described paid adult content as a gradual possibility while itch.io continued discussions with payment processors; it did not give a schedule. The platform’s current guide explains what indexing means and why NSFW projects may not appear to every user.
What itch.io announced about adult-game discovery
On July 31, 2025, itch.io administrator leafo posted: “Today, we are re-indexing free adult NSFW content.” The announcement made eligibility conditional on the creator selecting “No Payments” under Pricing. It did not say that every eligible project would appear immediately or remain indexed indefinitely; itch.io’s general indexing rules and any review still applied. Read the July 31 announcement.
This followed itch.io’s July 24, 2025 update saying it had deindexed adult NSFW content from Search and Browse while responding to scrutiny from payment processors. A July 28 FAQ addendum said the platform was contacting other processors but could not give a fixed timeline. These are dated statements, not confirmation of the policy’s status today. Read the July 24 update and July 28 FAQ addendum.
The catch: “No Payments” can make paid files free
“No Payments” is not merely a way to make a game free to download while preserving paid extras. In its July 31 post, itch.io warned that changing to this option would make individually priced files freely available. It also said it did not then support combining “owners only” content with a fully free page whose payments were disabled. The platform advised creators to use the setting only if they intended all project files to be free.

#1 Best Overall
- Two teams race to identify their agents from a 5×5 grid, guided by a spymaster who knows each card’s identity
- Spymasters give one-word clues and a number to link multiple cards, encouraging creative thinking
- Teammates guess words matching the clue while avoiding the other team’s agents, bystanders, and the assassin
- Revealing the assassin ends the game instantly, adding high-stakes tension
- Teams may guess up to the clue number plus one, allowing strategic risks or revisiting old clues
That makes the choice a monetization change, not just a discovery toggle. Before changing it, creators should check the page’s pricing and file access against what they are willing to offer without payment. The announcement’s eligibility condition was specifically the “No Payments” option; simply offering a free download while accepting payments was not described as equivalent.
Published is not the same as indexed
Itch.io’s current creator guide defines indexing as inclusion on its Search and Browse pages, also called Discovery Pages. A public project page may still be reachable by its direct URL, creator profile, followers, or a player’s library even when it is absent from those discovery listings. Whether the page and files remain available depends on their settings. See itch.io’s Search & Browse guide.

- Contains 110 cards with more than 400 questions about things that you should know
- An addictively entertaining trivia game where it will only be a matter of time before you hear yourself say ahhh!... I should have known that!
NSFW indexing also does not mean universal visibility. Itch.io says NSFW projects are shown only to users who enable NSFW browsing; for users without an account, NSFW browsing is off by default. A player who cannot find an adult project in search may therefore be seeing a browsing-preference effect rather than a deleted or unpublished page.
Other indexing requirements still matter
The “No Payments” condition in the July 2025 adult-content announcement was separate from itch.io’s ordinary indexing requirements. The current guide says a project generally needs to be public, have a cover image, and offer something to purchase, download, or play in-browser. Empty placeholder pages are not indexed. New sellers or pages flagged by internal checks may also be reviewed before indexing, so a qualifying page may not appear immediately.

Free projects and paid projects: what the announcement said
| Project setup | What itch.io said in July 2025 |
|---|---|
| Adult NSFW project set to “No Payments” | Eligible for the announced reindexing, subject to the platform’s other indexing rules and any review. Individually priced files could become freely available. July 31 announcement. |
| Adult NSFW project that accepts payments | Itch.io said paid content would return gradually while it spoke with payment processors; it gave no fixed schedule. The reviewed official sources do not confirm whether paid adult projects are now searchable. July 2025 update. |
The July 31 post also said a new content-warning system for NSFW pages was being implemented and would need to be completed for eligibility once available. The announcement does not establish the present status of that system or how many projects have since returned to discovery.

Why itch.io said it deindexed adult content
In its July 24 update, itch.io said payment processing was critical to creators and that it had acted after scrutiny from payment processors. It identified a campaign by Collective Shout concerning certain content on Steam and itch.io as part of the context. In the July 28 FAQ, itch.io said its open user-generated-content platform had over 2 million product pages and that it could not rely on user-provided tags as sufficiently accurate for a narrow review. Those are the platform’s explanations, not independently established findings about the processors’ decisions.
The July 31 post relayed a statement attributed to Stripe: “Stripe is currently unable to support sexually explicit content due to restrictions placed on them by their banking partners, despite card networks generally supporting adult content (with the appropriate registrations).” This describes Stripe’s stated position as relayed by itch.io on that date, not necessarily its current policy.

What remains unconfirmed
The official sources cited here do not provide a current count of restored adult projects or establish whether paid adult games have returned to ordinary Search and Browse discovery as of October 8, 2026. The reliable takeaway is narrower: itch.io announced reindexing for free adult projects under the “No Payments” condition in July 2025, while describing paid-content restoration as gradual and unscheduled. For an individual game, check its page and the creator’s current settings rather than assuming that the dated announcement guarantees present-day indexing.
