Without needing to reveal plot turns, Maelle’s age and outsider status make her place in the group especially charged. Her wish to see what lies beyond Lumière is not detached from the expedition’s danger: she is entering an uncertain future with the person she relies on, among people she may come to depend on. Those stakes provide a strong foundation for English to make Maelle’s vulnerability and resolve resonate.
How Jennifer English got the role
Game director Guillaume Broche said the team reviewed about 25 audition tapes for Maelle. In an Xbox Wire podcast interview, he recalled: “We received like 25 tapes for Maelle, and I was like, this is the one, and later they just told me, this is Shadowheart, and I was like, hmm, really? Okay.”

Broche’s recollection suggests that English’s audition made its impression before he knew she had played Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3. It is a casting story told by the director, not an independent record of the process, but it offers a useful distinction: the role was, in his account, a fit for Maelle on its own terms—not simply a choice made because of English’s previous high-profile character.

There is a persuasive case for saying yes if “highlight” means a performance with a particularly clear emotional purpose. Maelle’s isolation, her attachment to Gustave, and her yearning to leave home all meet the expedition’s severe time limit. English voices a character whose hope and uncertainty are central to those stakes, while the director’s audition anecdote indicates that her reading stood out to him independently of her earlier role.
