Its advantage is flexibility: you can change its stats out of combat at no cost, adjust its appearance without Transmutation Charges, and access unlocked pieces through the Legendary Armory on eligible characters. If you only need a particular stat set, ascended armor can serve just as well.
Do legendary and ascended armor have the same stats?
Yes. Legendary and ascended armor share the same attribute level, so equipping legendary armor does not provide a base-stat upgrade over ascended armor. The difference is what you can do with the gear, not how strong its attributes are. Guild Wars 2 Wiki: Legendary armor
What does legendary armor make easier?
Changing attributes
Legendary armor lets you change its attribute combination while out of combat without paying a conversion cost. Changing an ascended armor piece instead requires a Mystic Forge recipe. That conversion consumes the original armor and its upgrades, so remove upgrades you want to keep before using the recipe. Guild Wars 2 Wiki: Attribute combinations
Using armor across characters
Once unlocked, legendary armor is available through the Legendary Armory to eligible level 80 characters on your account that can use that armor type. Changing appearance
You can change the skin of legendary armor without spending Transmutation Charges. This is a convenience benefit; it does not improve the armor’s attributes.
When is ascended armor the better fit?
Ascended armor is a practical choice if you have the attributes you want and do not need frequent, free stat changes, shared access through the Legendary Armory, or charge-free skin changes. It is not a weaker version of legendary armor in base attributes.

If you later want a different attribute combination, ascended armor can be converted in the Mystic Forge using the armor, an Anthology of Heroes, ectoplasm, and an exotic insignia for the desired stats. The conversion consumes the original armor and its upgrades. Guild Wars 2 Wiki: Stat changing

Legendary armor has routes tied to raids, PvP, WvW, and open-world PvE, including Obsidian armor. These routes differ in their content, expansion, achievement, and currency requirements. Ascended armor is available through multiple sources, including rewards and vendors associated with the Wizard’s Vault, Fractals, PvP, WvW, and raids. Which one should you choose?
- Choose ascended if you want a specific set of attributes and do not need the legendary convenience features.
- Work toward legendary if you often change builds, equip multiple eligible characters, or value changing armor skins without Transmutation Charges.
- Choose your acquisition route based on the content you enjoy; legendary armor does not have one universal time or cost advantage over ascended armor.
