Life Is Strange: Double Exposure brings Max Caulfield back as an adult, with a new setting, a murder mystery and a supernatural power that sends her between parallel timelines. That makes it a meaningful return for players who want more of Max—but a qualified recommendation for anyone expecting the original game’s emotional impact or rewind mechanic to return unchanged.
What is Life Is Strange: Double Exposure about?
Max is now photographer-in-residence at Caledon University. When her friend Safi is found dead in the snow, Max tries to investigate. Her old rewind power does not work as expected: instead, she opens a path to a parallel timeline where Safi is still alive. The mystery and the shifting timelines form the game’s central premise, as outlined in Deck Nine’s announcement and on Square Enix’s store page.

Deck Nine called the game a “fully standalone experience” designed to welcome new and returning players. You can approach it as a new mystery centered on a familiar protagonist; the developer does not frame completing every earlier series entry as a prerequisite.
What makes it a return to Max’s story?
The appeal is not simply that Max appears again. She has moved into adult life, formed new relationships at Caledon and become entangled in an investigation that changes how her power works. The parallel-timeline premise gives her story a different supernatural hook from the first game’s rewind ability.

- TWO TIMELINES. ONE IMPOSSIBLE MYSTERY. When Max Caulfield finds her friend Safi dead in the snow, she tears open the way to a parallel timeline. Here, Safi is still alive - and still in danger! With her new power to Shift between two timelines – can Max solve and prevent the same murder?
- ORDINARY GIRL, EXTRAORDINARY POWER. Max is thrust into a thrilling supernatural murder mystery – more dangerous than ever before!
- TRAVERSE TWO TIMELINES. Forge allies and pursue suspects across two versions of reality, shaping both timelines through unforgettable choices.
- RACE AGAINST TIME. A relentless detective has Max in his sights, and Safi’s killer grows closer with every clue uncovered. Can Max survive long enough – to do the impossible?
- DECIDE THE FATE OF CALEDON. Explore two versions of a vivid winter campus, each packed with clues, secrets, and tough decisions.
That difference is also the central point of comparison. The original’s rewind power let players revisit moments; Double Exposure builds its mystery around two versions of events and the ability to move between them. PC Gamer’s review discusses the changed power and argues that the story revisits elements of the first game, including a close friend’s death and a mystery involving a young woman. The new mechanic makes the sequel distinct, but its presence alone does not establish that it is as satisfying as the original’s.
Is Life Is Strange: Double Exposure worth playing?
It is worth considering if the prospect of seeing adult Max take on a new supernatural murder mystery is what you want from a sequel. The premise gives her a fresh stage and a clear reason to use her altered ability, while the standalone framing makes the story more accessible to newcomers.

- The box set comprises a disc with LIFE IS STRANGE: TRUE COLORS and LIFE IS STRANGE: DOUBLE EXPOSURE, alongside a redemption code granting entitlement to LIFE IS STRANGE REMASTERED, LIFE IS STRANGE: BEFORE THE STORM REMASTERED, LIFE IS STRANGE 2, and all associated DLC and pre-order incentive items.
- Supernatural powers collide with everyday life, and every choice you make has consequences.
- LIFE IS STRANGE is a single-player narrative adventure series that focuses on heartfelt, grounded stories with a twist of the strange, and a franchise that has won over 100 awards since its inception - including from The Peabody Awards, BAFTA, and GLAAD.
- Over five cinematic, emotional adventures, you’ll Rewind Time as Max Caulfield and uncover the secrets of Arcadia Bay with Chloe Price, take a road trip with Sean Diaz and his telekinetic brother Daniel, find a new home with psychic empath Alex Chen, and return to Max to solve a murder across two timelines.
Expectations matter, though. Launch-window reviews did not all find the story or timeline structure successful. The Guardian’s review criticizes the tangled timelines and explains that the reviewer’s view of how the original ending affects Max’s present weakened their investment. GameSpot’s review also judged the sequel underdeveloped. These are individual critical perspectives, not a measure of every player’s response.
Is it a good sequel to the original?
As a continuation of Max’s life, Double Exposure offers a clear reason to return: she is older, in a new environment and facing a different kind of mystery. As a sequel expected to recreate the original’s particular emotional force, it is less certain. Some reviewers found the story’s structure or its relationship to the first game less effective than the premise suggests.
