Yes—if your priority is a revenge-driven crime story, a convincing 1968 Louisiana atmosphere and a memorable soundtrack, rather than constant mission variety. Mafia III: Definitive Edition remains a worthwhile single-player campaign for players who can tolerate repeated open-world activities. It is a weaker choice if monotonous objectives quickly ruin an otherwise good story for you.
The package is unusually complete: it includes the main game, its Story DLC and two bonus packs. On PC, an October 8, 2026 Steam update addressed several reported progression blockers, crashes, achievement-tracking problems and NPC or companion behavior issues. That improves the current case for playing, but it does not establish that every bug is gone or that consoles received the same fixes.

The short answer: who should play it?
| Choose it if you want… | Think twice if you want… |
|---|---|
| A personal revenge narrative centered on Lincoln Clay | A campaign where every activity feels substantially different |
| A stylized New Bordeaux, Louisiana, in 1968 | Minimal repetition in the open-world progression loop |
| Combat that supports gunplay, brute force and stealthier approaches | A completely modern technical remake |
| The main campaign and substantial Story DLC in one edition | A game with no remaining platform-specific problems |
The most important trade-off is simple: Mafia III’s presentation and central story can carry you through a long campaign, but its recurring criminal-enterprise activities can make the middle of the game feel routine. Your tolerance for that loop matters more than its age.
What Mafia III: Definitive Edition actually is
Steam lists Mafia III: Definitive Edition as a single-player action-adventure game released on May 19, 2020. Hangar 13 developed it and 2K published it. The setting is New Bordeaux, a fictionalized Louisiana city in 1968, and the protagonist is Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran.
#1 Best Overall
- NEW BORDEAUX, LA: A vast world ruled by the mob and detailed with the sights and sounds of the era.
- A LETHAL ANTI-HERO: Be Lincoln Clay, orphan and Vietnam veteran hell bent on revenge for the deaths of his surrogate family.
- REVENGE YOUR WAY: Choose your own play-style; brute force, blazing guns or stalk-and-kill tactics, to tear down the Mafia.
- A NEW FAMILY ON THE ASHES OF THE OLD: Build a new criminal empire your way by deciding which lieutenants you reward, and which you betray.
- Own Mafia III: Definitive Edition to unlock Lincoln’s Army Jacket and Car in both Mafia and Mafia II Definitive Editions.
Lincoln’s surrogate family is murdered after a Mafia betrayal. His campaign begins as a revenge mission and expands into an attempt to build a criminal organization of his own. That structure gives the game two connected motives: settle a personal score, then decide how power is distributed as the organization grows.
The Definitive Edition should be understood primarily as a complete-content package. The store descriptions establish the included game and expansions, but they do not present Mafia III as a new graphics-engine remaster. “Definitive” here is not evidence that every visual, animation or systemic weakness was rebuilt for a new generation.
What is included in the edition?
The Steam listing describes the package as including the main game, all four Story DLCs and two bonus packs. The named story expansions are Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned and Sign of the Times. The bonus content is the Family Kick-Back Pack and the Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack.

The practical benefit is that a new player does not need to assemble the campaign and its listed add-ons separately.

Why the story and setting still work
A focused revenge premise
Lincoln’s motivation is unusually clear from the beginning: his family has been taken from him, and the people responsible are the target. That focus gives the campaign an emotional spine even when individual missions follow familiar open-world patterns. The larger empire-building plot then adds decisions about which lieutenants to reward or betray.
A strong period identity
New Bordeaux is designed around a stylized 1968 Louisiana atmosphere. The period is not merely a date on the title screen; it frames the city, the criminal hierarchy and the way Lincoln’s campaign is presented. If you enjoy crime fiction with a specific regional and historical flavor, this setting is one of the game’s strongest reasons to continue.
Music as part of the presentation
PC Gamer’s coverage describes the game as “impeccably soundtracked” and praises its stylish music. That is a critic’s judgment, not an objective measurement, but it identifies an important part of the experience: the soundtrack helps give otherwise familiar driving and combat sequences a distinct personality.
Rank #3
- NEW BORDEAUX, A REIMAGINED 1968 NEW ORLEANS: A vast, diverse and seedy open world ruled by the mob and corrupt officials and richly detailed with the sights, sounds and emotionally-charged social atmosphere of the era
- AN UNINTENDED AND LETHAL ANTI-HERO: Be Lincoln Clay, an orphan and Vietnam veteran hell bent on revenge against the Italian Mafia for the brutal slaughter of the black mob, the closest thing to family he's ever had
- REVENGE YOUR WAY: Choose your own personal play-style, from brute force and blazing guns to stalk-and-kill tactics as you use Lincoln's military training and gathered intel to tear down the Italian Mafia
How the gameplay is structured
Three broad approaches to encounters
The store description presents several ways to handle enemies: brute force, gun-heavy combat and stalk-and-kill tactics. You are not locked into a single presentation of Lincoln’s violence. Players who prefer direct firefights can approach the game differently from those who enjoy isolating targets and using quieter tactics.
These options are meaningful at the level of moment-to-moment approach, but they do not eliminate the larger repetition problem. Changing how you clear an encounter does not necessarily change the type of activity the open world asks you to repeat.
Building the organization
Lincoln’s empire grows through decisions about lieutenants. The game asks you to decide who receives territory, rewards or punishment, including whether to betray particular allies. Those choices connect the open-world structure to the revenge narrative instead of making every activity feel entirely disconnected from the story.
The cost of the open-world loop
PC Gamer calls the campaign “a little repetitive” and describes recurring activities as monotonous. This is the central criticism to take seriously. The issue is not that the game lacks a story; it is that progress can require returning to similar criminal operations often enough for the pattern to become obvious.

- Mafia: The Old Country Definitive Edition includes: Full base game, The Man of Honor expansion, featuring two new story chapters, high-stakes Free Ride challenges, plus new weapons, outfits, and items*, the Padrino Pack, the Soldato Pack, the Gatto Nero Pack, and Bonus Materials with Digital Art Book and Original Score Soundtrack for the base game and Man of Honor expansion.
- UNCOVER A MERCILESS WORLD OF ORGANIZED CRIME: The rough-hewn beauty of Sicily's rugged countryside is a stark contrast to the grime of urban alleyways—but the treachery and violence of this gangland run just as deep. Rival families and their ruthless leaders wage unending turf wars in the shadows, hidden from the public eye. Trust is a fleeting rarity, and loyalties are worth killing for.
- PLAY A CLASSIC MOB MOVIE: You're the antihero of this gripping 1900s story, living out every tense moment of Enzo's descent into Sicily's clandestine criminal underworld. Soak in sun-drenched Mediterranean scenery with picture-perfect visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5, and immerse yourself in every period-authentic detail of this classic crime drama.
- FIGHT TO SURVIVE: Engage in life-or-death combat, be it up close with a blade or from afar with a variety of firearms. Ambush enemies for vicious stealth takedowns, or slice them up in close-quarters duels. If you prefer firearms, wield period-authentic handguns, rifles, and shotguns to overcome any odds and doggedly eliminate the Don's enemies.
- MAN OF HONOR EXPANSION: Sicily – Winter, 1905. In the months since his initiation, Enzo Favara has proven himself a reliable soldier of the Torrisi crime family. Now the Don entrusts him and Cesare with a delicate assignment: assist Ennio Salieri, a man of honor recently released from prison and intent on reclaiming what is his. At Salieri's side, Enzo is drawn deeper into the volatile underworld of the Valle Dorata, where loyalty is tested, debts are settled, and every move carries weight.
Some players will find the repetition acceptable because each operation advances Lincoln’s larger objective. Others will feel that the narrative is being stretched by tasks that do not offer enough mechanical variation. Neither reaction is universal, so use your own history with open-world games as the best predictor. If repeated outpost-style or territory-clearing activities already test your patience, Mafia III is a risky purchase even if its premise appeals to you.
What changed on PC in October 2026?
An official Steam community update dated October 8, 2026 says the developer addressed reported places where players could become stuck and unable to progress. The notes specifically mention missions including “Get Enzo Conti,” “Kill Tommy Marcano” and the Epilogue.
- Reported mission progression blockers were addressed.
- Some crashes were addressed.
- Achievement-tracking problems were addressed.
- Some NPC and companion behavior issues were addressed.
The update is useful context for a new PC player because the old reputation for technical roughness is no longer the whole current picture. PC Gamer’s October 10 coverage also highlighted these improvements while retaining the criticism that the game remains repetitive.

Platform differences that affect the decision
| Platform | What the available listing establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| PC via Steam | Single-player Mafia III: Definitive Edition; the October 2026 update addresses listed blockers, crashes, achievements and behavior problems. | That all bugs are fixed or that the update applies to consoles. |
| Xbox One | The Xbox store lists the game and its bundled Story DLC and bonus packs. | That Xbox received the exact Steam fixes described in October 2026. |
| Xbox Series X|S | The listing advertises 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements, alongside the bundled content. | A guarantee that every scene maintains 60 FPS or that the experience matches the PC build. |
The Xbox Series X|S description gives current-console buyers a clearer performance claim than the general package description: 60 FPS gameplay is advertised for that edition. It is still a store-listed feature, not an independent test result. PC players should evaluate the current Steam build on their own hardware, while console players should not assume that a PC patch note describes their version.
How the review evidence should influence you
Steam displayed 61% positive English-language user reviews out of 16,687 reviews when accessed on October 13, 2026. That is a live storefront snapshot, not a permanent score, critic rating or objective quality measure. The total and percentage can change as new reviews arrive.
PC Gamer’s 2026 article headline references an older 54% review score for the game. That score and the current Steam percentage answer different questions: one is an older professional review score, while the other is a changing aggregate of user sentiment. Do not average them or treat either number as a substitute for knowing whether you dislike repetitive open-world structures.

Who will get the most value from it?
Players who should try it
- You want a single-player crime campaign with a clear revenge motive.
- You enjoy a strongly defined 1960s setting and soundtrack-led presentation.
- You are comfortable repeating related activities when they support a larger territory or empire objective.
- You like choosing between direct gunplay, brute force and stealthier takedowns.
- You want the base game and listed Story DLC in one purchase.
- You are playing on PC and can install the October 2026 Steam update, or on Xbox Series X|S where the listing advertises 60 FPS.
Players who should skip it or wait for a deep discount
- You need every mission to introduce a substantially new mechanic or structure.
- You abandon open-world games when side activities begin to feel formulaic.
- You are looking specifically for a modern visual remake rather than a complete-content edition.
- You require proof that all historical bugs have been eliminated across every platform.
- You want a multiplayer mode; the listed product is a single-player action-adventure game.
A practical way to decide before buying
- Identify your tolerance for repetition. Think about whether you finished other open-world campaigns whose territory or outpost activities recur. If repetition is a deal-breaker, the story alone may not compensate.
- Choose the platform deliberately. On PC, use the current Steam build and install the October 8, 2026 update. On Xbox Series X|S, consider the listing’s advertised 60 FPS feature. Do not assume the PC patch notes apply to Xbox.
- Value the complete package correctly. The edition’s main advantage is bundled access to the campaign, named Story DLC and bonus packs, not proof of a full technical remaster.
- Buy for the experience you want, not for the review percentage. The 61% Steam snapshot shows disagreement. It should prompt you to examine the story, setting and activity loop, not replace that examination.
- Set expectations before starting. Approach Mafia III as a long revenge campaign with recurring criminal operations. You are less likely to mistake its deliberate loop for a technical failure if you know that repetition is the principal design criticism.
Is the Definitive Edition worth playing today?
For the right player, yes. Mafia III: Definitive Edition still offers a distinctive combination of Lincoln Clay’s revenge story, a stylized 1968 New Bordeaux, a strong soundtrack and flexible approaches to combat. The bundled expansions make it a convenient way to obtain the complete listed content, and the October 2026 Steam update makes the current PC version a more defensible recommendation than the game’s older bug reputation suggests.
The qualification is not minor: repeated open-world activities remain the main structural weakness identified by current coverage. If mission variety is your highest priority, that loop can outweigh the atmosphere and story. If you are willing to repeat related operations in exchange for a focused crime narrative, the game remains a worthwhile single-player campaign in 2026.
