Complete an SBC player only when the card solves a specific problem in your current squad and the improvement is worth every item you permanently submit. Overall rating, hype, or a high price on the Transfer Market is not enough to prove that a player fits. Define the role, check usable positions and PlayStyles, test chemistry under the correct game version, then compare the expected upgrade with your starter, substitutes, alternatives, reward and opportunity cost.
What “fits my squad” actually means
A fitting SBC player improves the way your team performs, not merely its average rating. Start by naming the job you want the card to do: progress the ball from defense, defend space, create chances between the lines, stretch a back line, win aerial duels, protect a lead, or provide a dependable substitute. If you cannot describe the job in one sentence, you are not ready to submit items.

Fit has several parts. The item must be usable in a position and role you actually employ, its relevant attributes must support that job, its PlayStyles should match your decisions on the pitch, and its chemistry and Chemistry Style must work in the current version of the game. It also has to improve your real XI or bench enough to justify losing the submitted players forever.
- Tactical fit: the card can perform the role your formation and instructions require.
- Attribute fit: the important attributes for that role are strong enough in context; overall rating is only a summary.
- Gameplay fit: PlayStyles and physical profile support how you defend, pass, dribble, press or finish.
- Squad fit: the player can occupy a useful position without forcing several weaker compromises elsewhere.
- Economic fit: the reward is better for your club than retaining the items and resources you would submit.
There is no official percentage that converts those factors into a guaranteed “worth it” score. Your conclusion should therefore be conditional: complete the challenge when the player fills a needed role and the resulting improvement exceeds the value of the items you will lose; skip or wait when the upgrade is marginal or consumes resources needed for a more important position.

Step 1: Define the squad problem before opening the challenge
Write down the role, not the card’s headline
Look at your current formation, tactics and match habits. A slow build-up team may need a midfielder who can receive under pressure and circulate possession. A high press may need recovery speed, stamina and defensive PlayStyles. A counter-attacking side may value acceleration and runs behind the defense more than an extra point of short passing.
Use a specific statement such as “I need a right-sided center-back who can defend space when my full-back advances” or “I need a bench winger who can attack tired full-backs for the final 30 minutes.” That statement becomes the test for the SBC. A card that does not solve it is not a fit, even if it has an attractive overall rating.
Find the actual weakness
Review goals conceded, lost duels and recurring possession problems from your matches. Separate a player problem from a tactical problem. If your midfield is exposed because both central players are instructed to attack, adding another attacking midfielder may not fix the issue. A defensive-minded card could help, or changing instructions might solve it without spending items.

A starter must improve your first-choice lineup immediately. A rotation player can justify the cost if you regularly change formations, play many matches in a short period or need reliable cover for several positions. A specialist substitute can be valuable despite limited starting minutes if their attributes and PlayStyles change the final phase of matches. Judge the card against the job and minutes you can realistically give it.
Step 2: Confirm positions, roles and tactical usability
Check every usable position
Open the item details and confirm that the player can occupy the position you use. Do not assume a card works in every tactic because its alternate positions look attractive. A position may be technically available but unsuitable for your instructions, defensive shape or preferred foot patterns.
Ask whether the item can start without displacing a better player, whether it can cover a second position during a match, and whether moving it creates a new weakness. A versatile card is useful only when those positions correspond to roles you actually play.
Match roles to the formation
Map the player to your formation before submitting. In a three-center-back system, a defender who is comfortable defending wide channels may fit one side while a stronger aerial defender protects the middle. In a narrow midfield, a card whose strengths require open space may not perform as advertised. Consider instructions, pressing height, build-up speed and where the player receives the ball.
EA explains that PlayStyles can affect abilities, team strategy and player roles, and recommends considering how they complement your formation. Use that guidance as a lens, not as a promise that any PlayStyle makes a card suitable for every tactic.

Step 3: Inspect attributes in the context of the job
Prioritize role-critical attributes
Build a short list of attributes that decide the player’s assignment. For a center-back, that may include defensive awareness, standing tackle, strength, reactions, pace and stamina. For a holding midfielder, interceptions, defensive awareness, short passing, ball control, composure and stamina may matter more than finishing. For a striker, acceleration, finishing, attacking positioning, composure and the traits that support your preferred chance creation deserve priority.
Check whether weaknesses are hidden by the overall rating. A highly rated winger may still be a poor fit if they lack the acceleration, stamina or ball control needed for your style. Conversely, a lower-rated specialist may be a better solution when their key attributes and PlayStyles match the role.
Evaluate the full match cycle
Consider how the card performs when fresh, under pressure and late in matches. Stamina matters for a player who must press or make repeated runs. Composure and reactions matter when opponents close down quickly. Physical strength may matter more in a direct league than in a possession-heavy setup. Do not treat one spectacular attribute as proof of complete fit.

Use Chemistry Styles under the correct version
Chemistry Style effects are version-specific. EA’s FC 26 launch update describes a 3/6/9-point boost model rather than the previous 4/8/12 model. It also says pace-focused boosts carry trade-offs, while other styles place more emphasis on attributes such as Composure, Reactions and Stamina. Check the live item screen and current in-game descriptions before deciding that a Chemistry Style fixes a weakness.
A Chemistry Style can improve a role-critical area, but it cannot turn an unsuitable body type, position or PlayStyle profile into the player you need. Compare the card both with the boost applied and without it, because chemistry conditions or a tactical change may alter the result.
Step 4: Read PlayStyles instead of counting them
PlayStyles describe abilities that make players perform differently. Read the individual descriptions and connect them to an action you use. A passing PlayStyle is relevant if you rely on fast distribution from a deep player; a defensive PlayStyle matters if you manually defend passing lanes; a finishing or dribbling PlayStyle matters only when the player regularly reaches those situations.
- Identify the two or three PlayStyles that directly support the defined role.
- Check whether they help your usual actions rather than a style you rarely attempt.
- Compare them with the PlayStyles of your current starter and realistic alternatives.
- Do not assume PlayStyles increase chemistry; EA states that they do not directly change chemistry.
PlayStyles should influence a close decision, not replace one. If the card lacks the pace, defensive awareness, passing range or stamina your role requires, a desirable PlayStyle may not compensate.

Use the live game screens
Check the item’s chemistry in the current squad and formation rather than relying on an old guide, screenshot or remembered rule. League, nation, club and position interactions can change between releases. Confirm what the player receives in your actual team, then test whether the intended Chemistry Style still produces the attributes you need.

Separate historical FIFA 23 rules from current rules
EA’s FIFA 23 chemistry update described players earning up to three chemistry points through shared nationality or region, league and club, while positional links and overall Squad Chemistry had been removed in that version. Those notes are historical context, not a complete guide to FC 26. Do not use FIFA 23 examples to make a current FC 26 decision.
Keep FC 27 announcements clearly labelled
EA’s FUT Deep Dive for FC 27 announced an intended launch date of 18 September 2026 and described planned changes: traditional puzzle SBCs would remain, while streamlined SBCs were planned for most Player and Upgrade SBCs. The announcement describes selecting eligible items toward a score, allowing duplicates, partial progress and more flexible requirements. It also describes all-year Role++ familiarity for special items in primary and secondary positions.
Those details were announced before launch and should not be treated as confirmed live mechanics until the released game and its current menus verify them. If you are making a decision in FC 26, use FC 26’s screens and rules; if you are playing FC 27 after release, re-check the challenge interface and official guidance.

Open the challenge and record the live requirements, reward and expiry. EA’s SBC guidance says requirements can include Squad Rating, Chemistry, Player Quality, Leagues, Nations and Clubs. The exact combination changes from challenge to challenge, so an old solution or expected cost is not a substitute for the current screen.

EA describes player SBCs, upgrade SBCs, puzzle SBCs, repeatable SBCs and multi-challenge groups. For a multi-challenge group, evaluate the complete reward and total submission requirement rather than judging one segment in isolation.
Step 7: Audit every item you would submit
Start with Club and SBC Storage
Review the players in your Club and SBC Storage first. Identify duplicates, untradeable items, players used in another squad, and cards you may need for a future objective or upgrade. A player that appears unused may be your only cover at a position or part of a chemistry arrangement.
Check the Transfer Market before buying
If the challenge requires additional players, compare the cost of acquiring them with the value of the reward. Do not buy a high-rated item simply because it is convenient if a different combination meets the requirements. Use the current market display; prices move and are not established facts for all accounts or times.

Assume submissions are final
EA says submitted items are permanently removed and cannot be restored by EA Advisors. Treat the confirmation screen as irreversible. Before confirming, inspect every slot, remove any player you would regret losing, and verify that the reward is the one you intended to claim.

Step 8: Compare the candidate with real alternatives
Make a direct comparison with the player currently starting, your best bench option and the alternatives you could realistically obtain. The useful question is not “Is this card good?” but “What changes in my matches if I replace this specific player?”

EA advises trying different combinations of player items and comparing the exchanged items with the reward. Extend that comparison to your own squad: include the starter you would replace, the strongest substitute you would lose, and the next realistic alternative. A small attribute gain at a position you rarely target may be less valuable than preserving flexible items for a position you use every match.
How to value the opportunity cost
Separate three costs. The first is the items submitted, including players you could have started, used as substitutes or saved for another SBC. The second is any market purchase required to complete the requirements. The third is the flexibility lost when duplicate or versatile cards are gone. Against those costs, place the reward’s role, expected minutes and improvement to your actual lineup.

They can satisfy a later requirement, provide emergency cover or reduce the cost of a future upgrade. Conversely, an untradeable duplicate with no tactical or future use may be an efficient submission. Make that judgment item by item rather than assigning every card the same value.
Do not use a universal threshold such as “the reward must be several ratings higher.” No official source establishes a rating, percentage or performance-improvement cutoff for SBC value. The correct threshold depends on how often the card performs the role and what you must surrender.
A practical decision procedure
- Name the job: write the position, role and weakness the player should address.
- Check usability: confirm the position, role, formation and instructions you would use.
- Inspect attributes: focus on the role-critical areas, including late-match stamina and pressure performance.
- Read PlayStyles: connect them to actions you actually perform; remember they do not directly change chemistry.
- Apply the current version: verify chemistry and Chemistry Style effects in the live game, including FC 26’s 3/6/9 boost model where applicable.
- Record the SBC terms: requirements, reward, challenge type and expiry as currently displayed.
- Audit submissions: inspect Club, SBC Storage and any planned purchases; assume every submitted item is gone permanently.
- Compare alternatives: evaluate the current starter, bench option and realistic replacements on role, attributes, PlayStyles, chemistry, tactics and cost.
- Estimate match impact: decide whether the change affects your first team, rotation or specialist substitutions often enough to matter.
- Choose conditionally: complete only if the role improvement justifies the items and flexibility you surrender; otherwise keep the items and reassess before expiry.
When completing the SBC is sensible
- The player directly fixes a weakness you encounter repeatedly.
- The card starts or provides a specialist substitute you will use regularly.
- Its positions, attributes and PlayStyles match your formation and instructions.
- It reaches useful chemistry without forcing several weaker players into the squad.
- Your submitted items are duplicates, surplus cards or less useful than the reward.
- You have checked the current expiry and are not rushing because of hype alone.
When skipping or waiting is better
- The card would be a small numerical upgrade but does not change a role or tactic.
- You would submit your only reliable cover, a player used in another squad or items needed for a known objective.
- The chemistry compromise pushes another important player out of position or off their intended boost.
- You would have to buy expensive items while a comparable alternative is attainable without irreversible submissions.
- The challenge expires later and your club is likely to receive more duplicates or better information before you commit.
- You are evaluating a pre-release mechanic or old chemistry rule rather than the current game interface.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“The overall rating proves it is an upgrade.”
Correction: compare role-critical attributes, positions, PlayStyles and the actual player being replaced.
“A famous PlayStyle fixes every weakness.”
Correction: tie each PlayStyle to a real action in your tactics and check the rest of the profile.
“Chemistry rules are the same every year.”
Correction: use the current game’s squad screen and version-specific official guidance. FIFA 23 notes and FC 26 rules should not be merged.

- Can I state the exact role and weakness this player addresses?
- Is the position usable in my formation and instructions?
- Have I checked the attributes that decide that role?
- Do the PlayStyles support actions I actually use?
- Did I verify chemistry and Chemistry Style effects for my game version?
- Did I read the current requirements, reward, type and expiry?
- Did I inspect every submitted item in my Club and SBC Storage?
- Did I check whether market purchases are necessary and sensible?
- Is the player a clear starter, useful rotation option or meaningful specialist?
- Would I still complete the challenge if the card had no hype or resale value?
If any answer is no, pause rather than submit. The strongest SBC decisions are made before the final confirmation screen, when you can still preserve your players and reconsider the role.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a higher-rated SBC player always improve my Ultimate Team?
No. Fit depends on the role, relevant attributes, PlayStyles, chemistry, tactics and the player you would replace. Overall rating alone is not a reliable upgrade test.
Can EA restore a player submitted to an SBC by mistake?
