Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor most players, Minecraft Bedrock Edition is the better choice. It runs on consoles, mobile devices, Chromebooks, and PC, supports controllers and touchscreens, offers console split-screen, and lets you play with other Bedrock players across those devices. Java Edition is the better choice for PC players who want community mods, custom Java servers, or early access to development builds. Neither edition is better for everyone, and the deciding factors are usually the devices you own and the edition your friends already play.
Bedrock and Java at a glance
The table below compares the two editions on the factors that most often decide the choice. Where an official source does not state a feature for an edition, the cell says so rather than assuming it is missing.
| Factor | Bedrock Edition | Java Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms listed in Minecraft’s store listings | Consoles, mobile, Chromebook, and PC | Windows, macOS, and Linux (PC) |
| Cross-play | With other Bedrock players on supported platforms | With other Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux |
| Controller and touch support | Listed in Minecraft’s official store comparison | Not stated in Minecraft’s official store comparison |
| Console split-screen | Listed in Minecraft’s official store comparison | Not stated in Minecraft’s official store comparison |
| Customization | Curated Marketplace content such as maps, skins, and mini-games | Community mods and custom servers |
| Snapshots (development builds) | Not stated in the official edition guide | Described in the official edition guide |
| Hosted Realm price (Minecraft Realms service page, checked 2026) | $3.99 USD/month for Realms (host plus two other players); $7.99 USD/month for Realms Plus (host plus ten other players) | $7.99 USD/month for Java Realms |
Cross-play stops at the edition line
Cross-play is the most important practical limit, and it is easy to misread. Bedrock players can play with other Bedrock players on supported platforms, including across different device families. Java cross-play works only between Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux. A Java player cannot join a Bedrock world or a Bedrock Realm through the ordinary edition-specific game services, and the reverse is also true. If your friends are on the other edition, the group has to pick one edition together.
Where Bedrock Edition has the advantage
Device coverage
Bedrock is the only edition that runs on consoles, phones, tablets, and Chromebooks. Java is a PC edition for Windows, macOS, and Linux. A household with a PlayStation or Xbox and a phone but no gaming PC has no Java option at all.
#1 Best Overall
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Controller and touch input
Minecraft’s official store comparison lists controller and touch support for Bedrock. For players who prefer a gamepad on the couch or a touchscreen on the go, this is a concrete reason to choose Bedrock. Keyboard-and-mouse PC players can use either edition on this point, so input preference matters mainly when you are not on a desk with a mouse.
Split-screen on a shared console
The official store comparison also lists console split-screen for Bedrock. Two or more people can share one console screen and one world, which is useful for families and roommates who want to play together without each person needing a separate device.
Rank #2
- Learn your way around one block at atime in the new tutorial mode
- Craft all sorts of items from boats todiamond armor and create enormousstructures
- Team up with friends in eight-playeronline multiplayer and four-player splitscreen modes
Performance on modest hardware
Minecraft’s official store comparison says Bedrock “does not require powerful computers or devices to run and will often run more smoothly than Minecraft: Java Edition.” That is the company’s general statement. It is not an independent benchmark, and it does not guarantee results on any particular machine. If performance is your main concern, test both editions on your own hardware before committing.
Where Java Edition still leads
Mods and custom servers
Minecraft’s official materials describe Java as the edition for extensive community mods and custom servers. If your plans involve modpacks, server-side plugins, or joining established Java server communities, Java is the better fit. Those communities are built around the Java edition, so Bedrock players cannot take part in them.

Snapshots and development builds
The official edition guide explains that Java offers snapshots, which let players try development builds before they reach the main release. Players who want to see upcoming changes early, or who test their own mods against new versions, will find this useful. The guide does not describe an equivalent feature for Bedrock.
Marketplace content versus community mods
Bedrock’s customization route is the built-in Marketplace, which offers curated content such as maps, skins, and mini-games. Java’s route is community mods and servers. The two are different ecosystems, so neither has a simple advantage in total content. Marketplace content is not all free. The official parents’ guide describes purchasable items and Minecoins, so budget for it if you plan to buy content. Java mods are typically made by third parties and vary widely in quality and compatibility, so the choice depends on whether you want a curated catalogue or an open one.

Hosted Realms: what they cost and how they differ
Realms are hosted worlds that do not require you to run your own server. They are edition-specific, so a Bedrock Realm can only be joined by Bedrock players, and a Java Realm only by Java players. The prices below come from Minecraft’s Realms service page as checked in 2026. Prices can vary by region and may include promotions, so confirm the current figures on that page before subscribing.
| Plan | Price (USD) | Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock Realms | $3.99 per month | Host plus two other players |
| Bedrock Realms Plus | $7.99 per month | Host plus ten other players |
| Java Realms | $7.99 per month | Not stated in the Realms service page figures reviewed here; check the live page |
The official edition guide still cites a ten-player maximum, but that figure dates from 2021. Treat the live Realms page as the current reference for plan capacities.

Multiplayer requirements
Several requirements apply regardless of which edition you choose:
- Every player in a session needs the same edition. Bedrock players join Bedrock sessions, and Java players join Java sessions.
- Players need current versions of their edition.
- Console multiplayer may require an active platform online subscription. Check the rules for your console, since they can change.
- Child accounts may need multiplayer permissions enabled before they can join online games.
Can you own both editions?
Yes. Minecraft’s official site says Java and Bedrock are sold together as a PC bundle. Console and mobile versions are bought separately for each platform. Buying the PC bundle gives a PC player access to both editions, but it does not allow cross-play between them.
How to choose
- Check your devices. If you own a console, phone, tablet, or Chromebook, Bedrock is your only option on that device. Java is available only on Windows, macOS, and Linux PCs.
- Check your friends’ edition. Cross-play follows the edition, so the group should play the same one.
- Check how you play. If you prefer a controller or touchscreen, or want console split-screen, choose Bedrock. Keyboard-and-mouse PC players can choose either edition on input alone.
- Check your customization plans. For mods, plugins, or Java server communities, choose Java. For curated Marketplace content, choose Bedrock.
- Check whether you want early builds. Snapshots are a Java feature described in the official guide, so choose Java if you want them.
- Check your hosting needs. If you want a hosted world, compare the Bedrock and Java Realm plans on the live Realms page and remember that each is limited to its own edition.
If you play on a console or mobile device, Bedrock is the practical choice. If you play on a PC and care about mods or Java servers, Java is the better choice. Most other players will find Bedrock the easier and more flexible edition, provided their friends are already on it.
