How much does Minecraft cost?
At the time checked, the U.S. Xbox listing showed the standard Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC at $29.99 or more. That is a U.S. storefront price signal, not a universal worldwide price. Taxes, currency, discounts, platform, and bundle contents can change the amount, so check your local store before buying.
The PC listing also showed higher-priced Deluxe and Ultimate bundles at approximately $39.99+ and $49.99+, respectively. These add cosmetic or Marketplace-related content; they are not required to play the core game.

What does a PC purchase include?
The standard PC purchase includes the Minecraft Launcher, Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock Edition), and Minecraft: Java Edition. Windows users can choose either edition from the launcher. Java is the normal desktop edition for macOS and Linux; Bedrock is the Windows PC edition in this bundle. See Minecraft’s buying guidance for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
This does not mean one purchase gives you Minecraft on every device. A PC purchase does not automatically provide the console or mobile version, which may be sold through a separate platform store and tied to a different entitlement.
Legal ways to play Minecraft without buying a permanent copy
1. Use the official free trial
Official trials let you test Minecraft, but they are not unrestricted versions of the game. Availability depends on the device and region. Start with the official Minecraft free-trial page rather than a third-party download.

The Java trial is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Minecraft describes the average trial as approximately five in-game days or 100 minutes. That is not necessarily a simple 100-minute real-world countdown.
- Public multiplayer servers are unavailable.
- LAN multiplayer is allowed, but only one demo account can join.
- A Microsoft account is required.

Bedrock Edition trial
The Bedrock trial lasts approximately 90 minutes, or about four and a half in-game days. It is more restricted than the full game:
- Single-player Survival mode only.
- Commands are disabled.
- Multiplayer and Realms are unavailable.
- Availability can vary by platform and region.
Check the current restrictions in Minecraft’s official free-trial support information.

2. Use a qualifying Game Pass plan
Minecraft is shown as included with certain paid Game Pass plans, including PC-only, Premium, and Ultimate listings on Xbox’s store pages. This can feel free if you already subscribe, but it is more accurately described as included with a paid subscription.
Game Pass access is not permanent ownership. You need an active qualifying subscription, and catalog inclusion or plan requirements can change. Check the current Game Pass catalog and the Minecraft Xbox listing.
3. Get access through Minecraft Education
Minecraft Education is separate from ordinary consumer Minecraft. A school or district may provide access through a school Microsoft 365 account, and Microsoft says Microsoft-verified academic organizations may qualify for a free trial. Paid licensing is also available for organizations that do not qualify.
A school license may not transfer to your personal account or provide the same servers, mods, worlds, or entitlements as Java or Bedrock. Ask the school or district which account and devices are supported.
4. Check genuine promotions
Occasional promotions or platform-specific offers may reduce the price or provide temporary access. They vary by country, account, device, and date. Treat them as promotions, not as evidence that Minecraft has become permanently free.
Is Minecraft free on your device?
Windows PC
The full PC version is normally paid. Buying the standard PC bundle gives Windows users both Java and Bedrock. An active qualifying Game Pass plan may provide subscription access, and official trials may be available.
Mac and Linux
Java Edition is the official consumer desktop route for macOS and Linux. The standard PC bundle provides Java access, but Bedrock is not the normal supported desktop option for these operating systems. A Microsoft account is required for PC access. See Minecraft’s edition and platform information.

Xbox
Minecraft is not generally free on Xbox. You may be able to play it through a qualifying Game Pass plan, but access ends when the relevant subscription or entitlement ends.

Buying the game and playing online are separate questions. Xbox console online multiplayer may require an eligible Game Pass plan, sold separately. Confirm the current requirement on the Xbox Minecraft listing.
PlayStation
The standard game is normally paid through the PlayStation Store unless a current subscription or promotion provides access. An official Bedrock trial may be available, but trial availability varies by platform and region. PlayStation Network and linked Microsoft account requirements may apply.
Nintendo Switch
Minecraft is normally a paid Nintendo Switch title. Nintendo account and Microsoft account linking may be required for some features, and online multiplayer can involve Nintendo’s online-service requirements. Check the current Nintendo eShop listing and the official account requirements.
Android
The full Android version is not generally free. An official Bedrock trial may be offered depending on region and availability. Android requires a Google account for the platform, while a Microsoft account may be needed for multiplayer, Realms, parental controls, and other advanced features.

The full iOS version is normally paid. Do not assume that any free App Store download is the complete game: it could be a trial, companion app, or different Minecraft product. Apple ID and, for advanced features, a Microsoft account may be required.
Java Edition versus Bedrock Edition
Choosing the right edition matters more than the word “free.”

- Java Edition: The PC edition for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is commonly chosen for Java community servers and its distinct modding ecosystem.
- Bedrock Edition: The edition used across Windows, consoles, and mobile devices. It is designed for cross-platform play among supported Bedrock devices and includes the Minecraft Marketplace.
Java players generally play with Java players, while Bedrock players generally play with Bedrock players. Owning both on Windows does not merge them into one technical edition. Java and Bedrock worlds and saves are not automatically interchangeable; the Xbox listing specifically warns that Java saves are not compatible with Bedrock.
Can you play Minecraft multiplayer for free?
Not through the ordinary free trial. Trial users cannot use normal public multiplayer servers or Realms. Java’s trial permits limited LAN participation, while Bedrock’s trial is restricted to single-player Survival.
With a purchased or subscription-access copy, multiplayer depends on the edition and service:
- Java: Multiplayer is within the Java ecosystem, including supported community servers and LAN play.
- Bedrock: Multiplayer can work across supported Windows, console, and mobile platforms.
- Realms: A private hosted-world service that costs extra.
- Console online play: May require the console maker’s eligible online subscription, even when you already own Minecraft.
In other words, “Minecraft multiplayer” can mean LAN play, a community server, a featured Bedrock server, or a paid private Realm. Each has different requirements.

Realms and Realms Plus
Realms is an optional paid private-server service. It is useful for families or friends who want an always-available shared world without managing their own server. It does not replace the base-game license or platform requirements. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules describe Realms Plus as a subscription used with supported Minecraft versions and state that the game is sold separately. Marketplace content and Minecoins
Bedrock’s Marketplace sells creator-made worlds, add-ons, skins, and texture packs. Some items may be free, while others use Minecoins or are included in optional content subscriptions. Free Marketplace items do not make the base game free, and Marketplace content is not the same thing as Java mods.

Game Pass renewal
If you play through Game Pass, the recurring subscription is the ongoing cost. Canceling or losing eligibility can remove access even if the game remains installed.
Why does Minecraft say “Buy” after I downloaded it?
Downloading the launcher or game files does not prove that the account owns Minecraft. The most common cause is an account or entitlement mismatch.
- Close the launcher or game completely.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase Minecraft or hold the Game Pass subscription.
- Check the relevant Microsoft or platform-store purchase history.
- Confirm that the console or mobile platform account is linked to the intended Microsoft account.
- Verify that Game Pass is active and that the current plan includes Minecraft.
- Make sure you installed the full edition rather than an available trial.
- Reopen or update the official launcher after confirming the account.
- If the license is still missing, contact official Minecraft Support or Microsoft support.
For children, decide before buying which Microsoft account will own the game. A parent purchasing on one account while the child signs in with another can make the launcher appear to require another purchase.

What about “free Minecraft” downloads?
A website offering the “free full version,” a cracked launcher, a pirated APK, or unlimited free Marketplace content is not offering an authorized copy. Avoid downloads that:
- Ask for Microsoft credentials outside official Microsoft or Minecraft sign-in pages.
- Promise the paid game, premium skins, or Realms at no cost.
- Require disabling security software.
- Come from unofficial launchers or file-hosting pages.
Unofficial copies can expose you to malware or credential theft, provide unstable or altered builds, and create account or support problems. The launcher may be free; that does not make the full game free.
Is Minecraft Classic free?
Older browser-based or promotional versions sometimes described as “Minecraft Classic” should not be confused with the current full Java and Bedrock products. The available information does not establish current availability, feature parity, or support status for a present-day Classic option. Before signing in or installing anything, verify that the page belongs to an official Minecraft or Microsoft property.
Are Minecraft updates free after purchase?
For the supported edition and platform associated with your purchase, updates are normally delivered through the game or platform ecosystem. However, avoid treating that as an unconditional promise covering every future product, platform, bundle, or licensing term. Check the current store and account terms for your device.

Which option is right for you?
- Want long-term access? Buy the official version for your platform. On PC, the standard bundle includes both Java and Bedrock.
- Already pay for Game Pass? Check whether your current plan includes Minecraft before buying it separately.
- Only want to test the game? Use the official Java or Bedrock trial, where available, and expect strict time and multiplayer limits.
- Want Java mods or Java servers? Choose Java Edition on a supported PC.
- Want console, mobile, or cross-platform play? Choose Bedrock on a supported device and check online-service requirements.
- Want a private shared world? Consider Realms only after you have the base game and any required platform subscription.
- Are you a student or teacher? Ask your school or district about Minecraft Education access.
Verdict: Minecraft is not generally free. The legitimate no-purchase routes are limited trials, access through a qualifying paid subscription, eligible Minecraft Education arrangements, and temporary promotions. For the complete game with reliable support, use an official store, account, and edition for your device.
