If you want your avatar to copy your facial expressions and head movements, you need a camera-enabled experience, device permission, and Roblox’s in-experience camera control. If you want to change what you see while playing, use Roblox’s Classic or Follow viewpoint camera modes instead.
Enable your webcam for avatar animation
- Join an experience that supports camera animation.
- When Roblox or your operating system asks for camera access, select Allow.
- Open the Roblox menu if the camera control is not already visible.
- Use the available camera control or open Self View, then select the camera icon to enable avatar animation.
- Move your head or facial features and check whether your avatar responds.
Roblox’s camera feature uses your device camera to mirror facial expressions and head movement onto your avatar. It is not a normal video-chat window. Camera and microphone access are separate and are off by default when you enter a supported experience. See Roblox’s official avatar-animation guide for the current interface.

Check whether an experience supports camera animation
Camera animation is not available in every Roblox experience. On the experience details page, open the About section and look for the Communication field. Depending on the experience, it may show:

- Camera: Avatar camera animation is supported.
- Microphone: Voice chat is supported.
- Microphone and Camera: Both features are supported.
Interface labels can change during Roblox updates, so look for the experience’s camera capability rather than assuming every game supports it.

Use Self View to check tracking
Open the Roblox menu and select Self View. The Self View panel lets you preview your avatar and includes a camera icon for controlling avatar animation. You can move, resize, or close the panel. Closing Self View does not necessarily disable camera input; use the camera icon to turn the feature off.
Select a different webcam
If your computer has an integrated webcam, USB webcam, or virtual camera:
- Join a camera-enabled experience.
- Open the Roblox menu in the upper-left corner.
- Select Settings.
- Scroll to Video Camera.
- Choose the camera you want Roblox to use.
Roblox normally uses the system’s default camera the first time. If the selected device is disconnected or unavailable, choose another camera and restart Roblox if necessary.

Allow camera access after denying the prompt
If you previously selected Don’t Allow, Roblox may not ask again. Exit Roblox, then open your device’s Privacy, Permissions, or Camera settings. Find Roblox and allow camera access, then reopen Roblox and rejoin a camera-enabled experience.
Menu names vary by operating-system version:
- Windows or macOS: Search system settings for camera privacy or camera permissions and allow Roblox or desktop applications to use the camera.
- iPhone or iPad: Open the Roblox entry in the device’s app settings and enable Camera.
- Android: Open Roblox’s app permissions and allow Camera.
A school, workplace, parental-control, or device-management policy can still block access even when Roblox appears to have permission.
Prerequisites and limitations
- Supported experience: The developer must enable camera functionality.
- Working camera: Use a built-in, USB, or supported mobile-device camera.
- Compatible avatar head: Roblox identifies facial-animation-compatible heads in Avatar customization and the Marketplace. Not every head supports facial animation.
- Android hardware: Roblox states that camera avatar animation is unavailable on Android devices with 3 GB of RAM or less. More than 3 GB is required.
- Communication requirements: Camera animation is separate from voice chat. Voice chat has its own age-check, eligibility, regional, and account requirements; enabling a webcam does not automatically enable voice chat. See Roblox’s age-check information.
Camera not working? Troubleshoot by symptom
No camera prompt appears
- Test in an experience that lists Camera under Communication.
- Check Roblox’s camera permission in your operating-system settings.
- Fully close and reopen Roblox.
- Make sure another application is not using the camera exclusively.
- Test the webcam outside Roblox.
- Reconnect an external webcam and restart Roblox.
- On Android, confirm that the device has more than 3 GB of RAM.
Permission is allowed, but Roblox says access is blocked
Confirm that permission was granted to the Roblox installation you are actually using. Desktop privacy settings may separately control access for desktop applications. Also check parental or device-management restrictions, close other camera-using programs, select the correct device under Settings → Video Camera, and restart Roblox after changing permission.

The camera works, but the avatar does not move
Verify that the experience supports camera animation, the camera icon is enabled, and your equipped head supports facial animation. Check that the correct webcam is selected and that your face is visible. Better lighting and a clear view can help tracking, although they are practical fixes rather than guaranteed requirements. Also check that Roblox has not selected a disconnected or virtual camera.

The feature is missing on Android
Devices with 3 GB of RAM or less are unsupported for camera avatar animation according to Roblox. A device with more than 3 GB is required; changing an in-game setting cannot bypass this limitation.
Camera use causes performance problems
- Turn avatar animation off with the in-experience camera control.
- Close Self View if you do not need the preview.
- Close other applications using the camera.
- Try a less demanding experience.
- Compare performance with Roblox camera access disabled.
These steps can identify whether camera tracking is contributing to the problem, but lag can also have unrelated device, network, or experience causes.

Turn camera animation off
Open the Roblox menu inside the experience and select the Camera icon to disable avatar animation. Closing the Self View window only closes the display panel; it is not the same as switching off camera input.

For changing the direction or perspective of the game view, use Roblox’s normal camera settings:
- Classic: The camera stays fixed until you adjust it manually.
- Follow: The camera rotates with your avatar as the avatar moves left or right.
- Desktop adjustment: In Classic mode, hold the right mouse button and drag.
- Shift Lock Switch: When available, this lets you toggle camera behavior with the Shift key.
Open the in-experience menu, choose Settings, and look for the camera mode or Shift Lock options. Developers can lock the camera mode, so the option may be unavailable. On mobile and tablet, open the experience’s Help menu for the current touch controls rather than relying on a universal gesture list. Roblox documents these controls in its in-experience Settings and Help guide.

Privacy and safety
Roblox describes avatar-animation camera access as opt-in. According to its support documentation, video used to generate avatar animation is processed on the device, is not recorded or stored for this feature, and does not leave the device. That statement should not be generalized to every Roblox feature involving photos, uploads, identity verification, or other camera-based content; Roblox’s Privacy and Cookie Policy treats those features separately.
Use your operating system’s camera indicator to see when access is active. When finished, disable the feature in Roblox or revoke Roblox’s camera permission in device settings if you prefer tighter control.
For Roblox developers
To let eligible players animate their avatars with cameras, open Roblox Studio and go to Experience Settings → Communication → Enable Camera. This creator setting is different from scripting the ordinary viewpoint camera. Scripted viewpoint control uses APIs involving Workspace.CurrentCamera, camera type, and related properties; see Roblox’s Experience Settings documentation and camera-control guide.
