As of February 3, 2026, Obsidian Entertainment was not working on The Outer Worlds 3, according to Bloomberg. The report also said The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed had missed sales forecasts set by Microsoft, but it did not say that the third game was permanently cancelled or give sales figures.
Is Obsidian making The Outer Worlds 3?
No active work on a third game was reported. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported on February 3, 2026, that Obsidian was not working on The Outer Worlds 3. This is a reported account of the studio’s status at that time, not an official announcement that the series has ended. Bloomberg’s report was based on an interview and profile of the studio.
PC Gamer’s summary of the same report likewise said there was no third Outer Worlds game in development. It also reported that Obsidian planned more games in the Avowed universe and expansions for The Outer Worlds 2 and Grounded 2. PC Gamer’s account corroborates the reported status; it does not establish a permanent decision about the franchise.
Was The Outer Worlds 3 cancelled?
The available reporting supports saying that Obsidian was not working on the game as of February 2026. It does not establish that a third entry had been formally announced and then cancelled, or that Obsidian has ruled one out forever. Plans can change, and the cited report is a snapshot rather than a guarantee of the studio’s current or future plans.

Why isn’t Obsidian making a third game?
Commercial performance is relevant context, but the evidence does not prove it was the sole reason for the reported project status. Bloomberg said that two of Obsidian’s three games released in 2025—The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed—missed sales forecasts set by Microsoft, Obsidian’s parent company. The report did not publish unit sales, forecast totals, budgets, or the size of either shortfall.
Obsidian head Feargus Urquhart described the results to Bloomberg as, “They’re not disasters,” and said, “I’m not going to say this was a kick in the teeth. It was more like: ‘That sucks. What are we learning?’” Those comments address the games that missed forecasts; they should not be read as a statement that sales alone determined whether to make The Outer Worlds 3.

Did The Outer Worlds 2 flop?
Bloomberg’s reporting establishes that The Outer Worlds 2 missed Microsoft’s sales forecast, not that it sold nothing, lost money, or failed by every measure. Without sales totals or the forecast itself, the size and financial consequences of the miss cannot be determined from the cited reporting.
The Outer Worlds 2 is a released game, not the unmade third entry. Obsidian’s support FAQ lists its release date as October 29, 2025, and lists PlayStation 5, Xbox, PC, Battle.net, and Steam among its platforms. Its official support FAQ answers release and platform questions. The official game page identifies Xbox Game Studios as publisher.

What Obsidian is doing with the series
Obsidian’s Patch 1.2.0.0 notes document post-launch additions and fixes for The Outer Worlds 2. That shows continued support for the released game, not a commitment to build a third one. Obsidian’s news page is the studio’s source for its published updates.
The reported plans for expansions to The Outer Worlds 2 indicate further activity in the setting, while the absence of active development on a third standalone game remains a separate point. An expansion is not the same as a sequel announcement.
