What makes Joy-Con 2 different?
Joy-Con 2 attaches to Switch 2 with a magnetic connector rather than the rail used by original Joy-Con on the first Nintendo Switch. Nintendo also lists a mouse sensor in each Joy-Con 2, alongside an accelerometer and gyroscope. The right controller has a C Button, and both controllers feature HD rumble 2. How Joy-Con 2 mouse controls work
The mouse sensor lets a Joy-Con 2 operate as a mouse in supported games. Nintendo’s developer interview gives two examples: in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, one Joy-Con 2 can control character movement while the other aims and shoots as a mouse; in Drag x Drive, players use one Joy-Con 2 in each hand as a mouse. These are game-specific uses, not a claim that every Switch 2 game supports mouse controls. Nintendo’s interview with the developers describes the examples.

Can original Joy-Con work with Switch 2?
Wireless pairing and physical attachment are separate kinds of compatibility. Original Joy-Con can connect wirelessly to Switch 2, but cannot attach to the console. Joy-Con 2, conversely, cannot connect wirelessly to the original Switch. Nintendo Support distinguishes these limits:

Attachment and wireless compatibility are documented by Nintendo Support. Nintendo’s wording establishes that original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2; it does not specify wireless use for Joy-Con 2 with its own console, where the controllers attach magnetically.

Which grips and charging options fit?
Original Joy-Con grips and charging grips do not fit Joy-Con 2 because the controllers differ in size and attachment style. To charge Joy-Con 2 away from the console, Nintendo offers a separately sold Joy-Con 2 charging grip. The controllers can also charge through the Switch 2 console. Check the accessory’s regional listing and availability before buying. Nintendo Support documents the grip incompatibility, and Nintendo’s UK specifications list the charging options.
Nintendo lists a 500 mAh battery in each Joy-Con 2 and estimates approximately 20 hours of battery life and approximately 3.5 hours to charge. Those are manufacturer specifications and estimates, not independent measurements; Nintendo notes that actual battery life varies. See the specifications.

What Nintendo said about the magnetic connection
In an April 2025 media preview, the Associated Press reported that Joy-Con 2 clicked into place magnetically and asked Nintendo producer Kouichi Kawamoto about a connection that appeared flimsy. Speaking through a translator, Kawamoto said, “It may at first glance look flimsy, but if you’ve actually touched it, I think you’ll see that it’s not as flimsy as it looks,” and, “We did our best to make sure it’s strong.” The AP said its limited time with the demo unit was not enough to assess sturdiness independently.
