It may be a good fit for children who enjoy open-ended drawing and light simulation, but parents should know that wine is part of the game’s premise. Nintendo UK lists the Switch version as PEGI 3; Nintendo’s US listing shows the ESRB content descriptor “Alcohol Reference.” Those are regional rating details, not a guarantee that every child will enjoy the game or that it suits every family.
What children do in Passpartout: The Starving Artist
You play as a French artist, paint pictures, and sell them to customers to make progress in the art scene. Nintendo describes the presentation as a living puppet theater, with new galleries and customers to unlock. Steam describes the same basic loop of selling art to customers.

What the ratings say—and what they do not
| Region and source | Listing information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom — Nintendo UK | PEGI 3 | The UK Switch listing gives this age rating; it is not a universal rating for every region. |
| United States — Nintendo of America | ESRB descriptor: Alcohol Reference | The Nintendo listing excerpt reviewed does not show an ESRB age-category label, so the descriptor alone does not establish one. |
Rating categories and content descriptors provide different information for parents. PEGI and ESRB labels belong to different regional systems and should not be treated as interchangeable. See the ESRB Ratings Guide for an explanation of its categories and descriptors.

Does the game include alcohol?
Yes: wine is part of the comic premise, and the official Nintendo descriptions refer to wine bills. Nintendo’s US listing labels the content “Alcohol Reference.” The official listings do not explain every scene or quantify how often alcohol appears, so they do not support a more specific claim about its extent.
How to decide whether it suits your child
- Consider their interests. The main activity is making pictures and selling them to customers, so it may appeal to a child who likes creative, open-ended play.
- Check your local rating. Use the rating and content details shown for your region rather than assuming another country’s label applies.
- Think about your family’s comfort with the wine reference. It is named in the official product descriptions, but the available descriptions do not detail its frequency or every context.
- Set expectations about what the game is. It is an art-and-selling simulation, not simply a drawing app; customers and progression are part of the play loop.
Platform and purchase details
Nintendo’s US store lists the Switch version as a digital, one-player game, with touch-screen support. It names Flamebait as publisher and Snowden Studios as developer. These details apply to the US Switch listing; availability, format, and stock can vary by store and region.
