How Mega Evolution works in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
The Pokémon Company describes Mega Evolution as a feature players can use in battle. Its official game site says: “Discover the wonders of Mega Evolution—and harness its power in battle—in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.” The official game site establishes its battle role, but does not set out a complete list of rules.
In a July 22, 2025 announcement, The Pokémon Company said players may obtain Mega Stones while conducting research. Those stones allow players to register Mega-Evolved Pokémon in the Mega Evolution Pokédex. The announcement gives Gardevoir holding Gardevoirite as an example of a Pokémon that can Mega Evolve. The announcement’s gameplay details do not establish every requirement or battle effect.
Which Mega Evolutions have been announced?
Official announcements have confirmed several examples, but not a complete catalogue of every Mega-Evolved Pokémon in the game and its DLC.

- Join Team MZ and the Mega Evolution Successor, Korrina, to investigate Hyperspace Lumiose, the otherworldly home to rare and hyper-strong Pokémon
- Discover new Mega Evolutions such as Mega Raichu X, Mega Raichu Y, Mega Chimecho and Mega Baxcalibur
- Claim Holo-X and Holo-Y in-game apparel items, which you can wear as soon as you are able to customize your character’s look and outfit in the main game
- Mega Gardevoir: The July 2025 announcement describes Gardevoir holding Gardevoirite as an example of Mega Evolution. The Pokémon Company’s announcement.
- Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y: Both appear in the Mega Dimension DLC. Each uses a different Mega Stone, and each can be encountered under specific conditions in the DLC. The September 12, 2025 announcement.
- Mega Garchomp Z: In Mega Dimension, players can obtain Garchompite Z by defeating Mega Garchomp Z in a special hyperspace distortion. This encounter requires the DLC. The February 27, 2026 announcement.
Where can you play it, and what does Mega Dimension require?
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is available for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Mega Dimension is downloadable content that works with both the original game and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo says a copy of the base game must also be present on the system. Nintendo’s DLC information lists Mega Stones for Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y among the additional story content.
The DLC’s additional story follows completion of the main game’s story. The Pokémon Company’s Mega Dimension announcement says players must complete the main story before progressing through the DLC story.

The Pokémon Company announced on September 30, 2026 that a bundle containing Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Mega Dimension is scheduled to release on October 29, 2026.
