SteamVR supports multiple PC headset families, and Steam Link can stream eligible Steam games to supported standalone headsets. The better choice depends on the games you want, your computer, and whether you prefer a cable or wireless setup.
What PC VR offers today
PC VR remains a usable way to play VR games, but the existence of a supported platform does not establish how often new games are released or how long every headset will remain supported. Valve still lists SteamVR for a range of PC headsets, and Half-Life: Alyx is one prominent game with an official Steam listing. Neither fact guarantees that a particular title works with every headset or that a steady stream of new releases will follow.

Can you play SteamVR games on a standalone headset?
Yes, if the headset and setup are supported. Steam Link is a streaming route: a computer runs Steam and SteamVR, then sends eligible games over a compatible wireless connection to a supported headset. That is distinct from running a standalone headset’s native apps directly on the device.

Meta describes Quest 3 as an all-in-one headset, and Steam Link documents a PC-streaming path for specified devices. This hybrid approach can provide access to standalone experiences as well as PC VR, but streaming does not guarantee the same performance or experience as a dedicated PC headset. Check the Steam Link compatibility and setup guidance for your exact headset, computer, and network before buying accessories or assuming a connection will work.
What PC do you need?
Steam’s published SteamVR minimums are a starting point for the software, not a promise of smooth performance in demanding games. Its page lists Windows 10 or later for the current Steam client, an Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350-equivalent processor, 4 GB of RAM, and graphics at GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290-equivalent or better. Steam lists GTX 1060 or RX 480-equivalent graphics as recommended. It also lists broadband internet, USB 2.0 or newer, and HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 or newer. Individual games may require more; check both the game’s requirements and the current SteamVR page.

Streaming has additional conditions beyond SteamVR’s general requirements. Steam Link requires a computer running Steam and SteamVR, a supported headset, and a compatible wireless setup. Steam warns that some AMD graphics cards, including the RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT, are not supported for hardware encoding. Review the latest Steam Link requirements for the exact streaming route you plan to use.
SteamVR support and Steam Link support are different
SteamVR’s supported device families include Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality headsets, and others. Steam Link’s streaming device list is narrower. A headset appearing in SteamVR’s supported families does not, by itself, establish that it can use Steam Link. Confirm compatibility for your specific headset and software path on the relevant official page before purchasing.

Should you choose a hybrid headset or dedicated PC hardware?
A hybrid headset can be a sensible entry if you want to try standalone apps as well as PC-streamed games. Meta’s Quest 3 product page describes it as an all-in-one device with full-colour passthrough. Meta lists two displays at 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye, a 104° horizontal by 96° vertical field of view, Touch Plus controllers, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results. Its Italian storefront displayed €619.99 for the 512 GB model when accessed on October 4, 2026; that is a regional listing, not a universal price.
A dedicated PC headset and a hybrid headset involve different trade-offs in cost, display, tracking, comfort, and setup. There is no universal winner: compare the total cost, your computer’s capability, the headset’s tracking and connection method, and whether it supports the games you actually want to play. A cable or a particular router is not mandatory for every configuration; first choose a headset and connection method, then check the requirements for that setup.

How to decide whether PC VR is right for you
- Start with the games. Check that the PC VR titles you care about are available on your chosen platform and compatible with your headset. A Steam listing confirms availability, not universal headset support.
- Check the whole hardware chain. Verify the computer, graphics card, headset, connection method, and game requirements together rather than relying on a headset’s headline specifications.
- Choose how you want to connect. A wired setup and wireless streaming have different equipment and network considerations. For streaming, follow Steam Link’s current device and computer guidance.
- Account for regular use and personal fit. Comfort, motion sensitivity, room space, and how often you expect to play affect whether the cost and setup are worthwhile for you.
- Keep support claims specific. Check the current official support page for your exact device; support for one headset family or connection route does not establish support for every model or indefinite future support.
For someone who already owns a capable gaming PC and has specific PC VR games in mind, the case is strongest. If you are uncertain about committing to PC-only play, a supported hybrid headset offers a route to standalone use as well as PC streaming, provided its particular setup meets your needs.
