Before buying a Steam game, compare its recent and lifetime reviews, read dated reviews that address your priorities, and—if it is in Early Access—check what the developer says about its current state and plans. Steam’s usual refund criteria for games are a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. Early Access playtime counts toward that limit, so it is not a guaranteed trial period.
How to read Steam reviews before you buy
Steam’s review score aggregates positive and negative recommendations. Treat it as a starting signal, not a verdict: the written reviews can show whether the reasons behind the score matter to you.

Compare recent and lifetime scores
Steam presents recent and lifetime review views. The recent view is useful for gauging current reception; the lifetime view includes older opinions that may describe an earlier version. See Steamworks’ User Reviews documentation for how these views are presented.

Open reviews that explain why the writer recommends or does not recommend the game. Check their dates and look for comments about the parts of the experience you care about, such as performance, available content, updates, multiplayer activity, or features that are still missing. A prominent review may focus on different priorities from yours.

Reviews from different periods can help reveal how feedback has changed, but they are not proof that a particular issue is fixed or that future updates will arrive. Steam Support also explains that its review score can reflect platform decisions about periods classified as off-topic; read the review context alongside the summary score. What Steam’s standard game refund rules require
Steam’s usual criteria for a game refund are a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. Steam counts online, offline, and shared-library playtime toward the limit. These are the standard criteria described in Steam’s refund instructions and common refund questions; they are not a guarantee for every purchase type or circumstance.

If you fall outside the usual criteria, Steam says you can still submit a request for review, but approval is not assured. Purchase categories such as downloadable content, in-game purchases, bundles, preorders, and hardware can have different conditions. Regional consumer rights may also affect the rules, so check Steam’s refund policy and, if relevant, its EU/UK withdrawal guidance for your purchase and location.

Submit a refund request
- Sign in to Steam Help and open Purchases.
- Select the purchase and choose the issue that best describes the problem.
- Choose I’d like to request a refund.
- Where available, select Steam Wallet or the original payment method.
These are the request steps on Steam’s refund instructions. Submit promptly if you are considering a refund; do not assume an exception will be granted.

How to assess Early Access risks
Early Access means the game is still in development. Steam advises buyers to judge the game as it plays now, not only by its intended final version. Its guidance cautions that some developers may be unable to finish their game. Read Steam’s Early Access guidance before treating a roadmap as a promise.
Check the developer’s plans and the game’s current state
On the store page, read the developer’s questionnaire in the blue Early Access section. Use it to understand what the developer says is already playable, what it plans to change or add, and how it describes the development process. Then compare those statements with dated reviews and the current store-page material. If the game’s present state does not appeal to you, Steam advises waiting rather than buying solely for the prospect of future features.

Look at update history without treating it as a guarantee
Steam says it adds a store-page notice when an Early Access game has gone more than 12 months without an update and an update-type event. That notice is a useful prompt to investigate the game’s development activity, not a prediction of whether or when development will resume.

Early Access games use the same standard refund policy as other games, and their playtime counts toward the two-hour limit. Consider whether you are comfortable with the current build and the usual refund criteria before purchasing; do not rely on the refund window as a guaranteed way to try the game. - Current fit: Does the game’s present state suit what you want to play? Use recent reviews and current store-page material.
- Direction of change: Compare recent and lifetime review views, then check dated feedback and update history for context.
- Development uncertainty: Read the Early Access questionnaire and decide whether you would still be satisfied if the planned final state never arrives.
- Refund exposure: Keep the purchase date and accumulated playtime in mind, especially for Early Access.
