Its interconnected routes, shortcuts, checkpoints, and challenging bosses fit the comparison; its fast, combo-driven, cinematic combat points more toward character-action games. Players who enjoy parries and demanding encounters may recognize parts of Sekiro, but previews describe a quicker rhythm and more forgiving parry timing.
Why Phantom Blade Zero gets called a Soulslike
The label fits parts of the game’s world and encounter design. In a six-hour preview, MeriStation reported interconnected areas, locked doors, shortcuts, checkpoints, a dark atmosphere, and challenging bosses. The outlet also described Soulslikes as an influence on the level design. Those are recognizable genre signals, but they do not settle how the combat or progression feels.

MeriStation reported that S-GAME characterized the game as “30% Soulslike.” Treat that as a colorful, attributed description—not a measured genre breakdown or an official definition. Steam also displays “Souls-like” among its user-defined tags, alongside “Hack and Slash”; those tags reflect community labeling rather than a definitive genre classification. Steam’s store page lists the game as an action RPG, while PlayStation calls it a dark wuxia action RPG. PlayStation’s August 2026 overview presents its combat and Wulin setting through that lens.

How its combat compares with Soulslikes
The main distinction is pace. S-GAME’s stated aim is fast, choreographed kung fu action, rather than the slower, more strategic action associated with Soulslikes. In its 2023 account of the combat approach, the developer cited hack-and-slash games such as Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden, as well as the movement of 1990s kung fu films. It said the moves needed handcrafted animation because motion capture could not do them justice. S-GAME’s 2023 explanation describes that design intent.

Hands-on previews support the contrast: PC Gamer described elaborate animation and combo transitions, and MeriStation characterized the combat as fast and flowing. MeriStation reported no stamina bar in the preview build it played. These are observations of preview versions, not confirmation that every difficulty or the final release works identically.
- Combat pace: Preview impressions emphasize rapid combos rather than deliberate, stamina-managed exchanges.
- Defense: Parrying is part of the combat. PC Gamer found the timing more generous than in Sekiro during its hands-on preview.
- Death and progression: MeriStation reported that its normal-difficulty preview did not remove souls or experience on death. It described upgrades as focused on unlocking combos and moves rather than farming a currency to raise character attributes.
- World structure: Interconnected routes, shortcuts, checkpoints, and tough bosses are among the clearest Soulslike similarities reported in the preview.
Is Phantom Blade Zero like Sekiro?
There is a meaningful overlap in the emphasis on parries and demanding enemy encounters. But a parry alone does not make the games play alike. PC Gamer’s preview found Phantom Blade Zero’s parry timing more generous than Sekiro’s, while MeriStation described a faster rhythm and no stamina bar in the normal-difficulty build it played. Those impressions suggest a less measured feel than Sekiro, though they should not be treated as a guarantee about every setting or the finished game.

Is it closer to Devil May Cry or Dark Souls?
For combat identity, the evidence leans toward character-action games: the developer explicitly names Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden as inspirations, and previews describe quick, animation-led combos. For exploration and atmosphere, the Soulslike comparison is more useful. Neither comparison captures the whole game: S-GAME frames it as wuxia action, drawing on kung fu cinema and Chinese culture as well as action-game influences.

What the combat system includes
The official feature overview describes seamless combos, difficulty adjustment, more than 30 main weapons, and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. The PlayStation product page also describes more than 30 primary weapons and 20+ Phantom Edges; because the August 2026 S-GAME overview gives the later count for secondary weapons, that is the more current official figure cited here. Weapon variety and combo options point to a combat system built around expressive offense, but the available preview impressions do not establish how every weapon or difficulty changes the Soulslike feel.
