Check Sony’s live PlayStation Service Status page first. If it shows Degraded, Not running, maintenance, or an incident for the feature you need, the problem is probably on Sony’s side. If every category says Service is running, PSN may still be working while a specific game, region, account, internet connection, or console is having trouble.
PSN status changes over time, so a previous screenshot or cached search result cannot confirm whether PlayStation Network is down now.

How to check whether PSN is down
- Open Sony’s official PlayStation Service Status page.
- Confirm that the selected country or region matches your location.
- Review each category: Account management, Gaming and social, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct.
- Look for the current status, affected platform, affected service, incident details, and any maintenance start time.
- Refresh the page after a few minutes if the problem continues.
Sony’s page is the best source for outages it has identified. A green result means Sony is not reporting a broad problem in that category; it does not prove that every game, account, region, or console is working normally.
What the PSN status categories mean
- Account management: Sign-in, account creation, profiles, and related account functions.
- Gaming and social: Online multiplayer, friends, parties, trophies, and other social features.
- PlayStation Store: Store browsing, purchases, downloads, and access to store services.
- PlayStation Direct: Sony’s hardware and merchandise storefront.
- PlayStation Video: Video-related functionality where available.
Not every game depends on every category in the same way. A game can be unavailable because its publisher’s servers are down while PSN remains operational.

How to check PSN on PS5 and PS4
PS5
On current PS5 software, open Settings > Network and look for the PlayStation Network status or connection-status option. Menu wording can change with system updates, so use the web status page if the shortcut is missing or unclear.
For a local connection test, go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Sony recommends this type of test for connection errors. See its guidance for PS5 connection error troubleshooting.
PS4
On PS4, use Settings > Network to run Test Internet Connection. For the authoritative PSN outage check, open Sony’s status page on a phone or computer rather than relying on a console menu shortcut whose wording may differ by system software.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePSN is up, but you still cannot connect
Use the symptom that best matches your problem:
| Symptom | Most likely area to check |
|---|---|
| Only one game fails | That game’s publisher or developer servers |
| All online games fail | PSN, your router, ISP, or console network |
| The Store fails but games work | PlayStation Store or account/payment services |
| You cannot sign in | Account management, credentials, or PSN authentication |
| A digital game shows a license error | License verification, account, or PSN authentication |
| Friends or parties are unavailable | Gaming and social services |
| The status page will not load | Your browser, DNS, ISP, or local connection—not necessarily PSN |
Check the game’s own servers
Look for the game publisher’s official status page if the failure occurs only after launching one title. This is especially important for games using separate services from companies such as EA, Activision, Epic, Ubisoft, Blizzard, or Bungie.
Typical signs of a game-server outage include:
- Other games and the PlayStation Store work normally.
- The game displays its own maintenance message.
- Friends can use PSN but cannot enter the same title.
- The publisher reports an incident.
- The error appears only after that specific game starts.
Quick troubleshooting when no PSN outage is reported
- Run the console’s internet test. Check whether it receives an IP address, reaches the internet, and signs in to PSN.
- Restart the console. This can clear a temporary connection or authentication fault.
- Restart the modem or router. Sony’s guidance for some connection errors says to turn it off, wait at least five minutes, and turn it back on. This can help with a local network problem, but it cannot repair a Sony-side outage. See Sony’s WS-115338-1 guidance.
- Try another online game or app. This separates a platform-wide connection issue from a game-specific one.
- Test another device on the same network. If every device has trouble, your router or ISP is more likely responsible.
- Try Ethernet or another network temporarily. A wired connection or mobile hotspot can show whether Wi-Fi or your home ISP is involved. Use this only as a diagnostic comparison.
- Search the exact error code. Use the PlayStation Support hub and the code’s official support page.
- Contact PlayStation Support if PSN is operating, the console passes basic tests, and the same issue persists.
When restoring licenses may help
If a digital game or add-on reports a license-confirmation problem, PS5 users can try Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. Sony lists this as a remedy for certain license-related errors, including CE-109258-5.

Do not use Restore Licenses as the default response to a confirmed PSN outage. It is relevant to digital-content or license symptoms, not to every sign-in, multiplayer, or server failure.
How to confirm a partial or emerging outage
Sometimes users report failures before Sony’s status page changes, or only a narrow region, platform, or feature is affected. Compare:

- The affected game or publisher’s official status page.
- The relevant PlayStation Support error-code page.
- Your ISP’s outage page.
- Downdetector’s PlayStation Network page.
Downdetector measures user reports. A spike can reveal a pattern or emerging incident, but it does not independently confirm the technical cause. Describe it as evidence that users are reporting problems unless Sony or the publisher confirms an outage.
Check whether reports are concentrated in one country, whether they affect PS5 or PS4 specifically, and whether they involve sign-in, the Store, social features, or multiplayer. The status page can identify affected platforms and services when Sony has documented the incident.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do during a confirmed PSN outage
- Record the error code and the feature that failed.
- Note the affected platform, region, and approximate start time if Sony provides those details.
- Check the official status page periodically.
- Follow official PlayStation support or announcement updates.
- Wait rather than repeatedly changing DNS, router, account, or console settings.
Do not factory-reset the console, delete games or save data, rebuild the database, or repeatedly enter your password just because PSN is unavailable. Local maintenance cannot fix a confirmed Sony-side incident.

What to do after PSN comes back
- Restart the console if it remains signed out.
- Run the internet connection test.
- Sign out and back in only if necessary.
- Relaunch the affected game.
- Retry failed downloads or purchases.
- If the problem is specifically a digital-license error, try Restore Licenses on PS5.
If the status page is green but the same problem continues, return to the game publisher’s status page, check the exact error code, and test your local network before assuming Sony’s service has failed.

Fast diagnostic decision tree
- Is Sony reporting an incident? If yes, identify the affected category and wait for updates.
- Is only one game affected? Check that game’s publisher.
- Does the console pass its internet test? If no, troubleshoot the router, Wi-Fi, ISP, or console connection.
- Does another device work on the same network? If no, investigate the home network or ISP.
- Does the error mention licenses? Consider Restore Licenses on PS5.
- Does the issue remain after a normal restart? Search PlayStation Support for the exact code and contact support if needed.
Frequently asked questions
How long do PSN outages usually last?
There is no reliable universal duration. Wait for Sony’s incident updates rather than relying on an estimate from an unrelated outage or social post.
Can you play digital games while PSN is down?
It depends on the game, whether it requires online access, and whether the console can validate its license. Do not assume that every digital game will either work or fail during every PSN incident.
What does a code such as WS-116414-7 mean?
Error codes are specific to the failure and system. Search the exact code in PlayStation Support rather than applying a generic fix.
Is PlayStation Store downtime separate from a PSN outage?
It can be. Sony lists the Store separately, so Store problems may occur while gaming and social features continue to work.
