Is PS Plus worth it if I only play the monthly games?
Essential is the natural tier to evaluate if monthly games are your main reason for subscribing. Judge the subscription by the games you are likely to play, not by assigning a fixed dollar value to every title offered. A useful estimate is to divide the annual Essential price by the number of monthly games you expect to play in a typical year. That gives you a rough cost per game played; it is a personal calculation, not a Sony statistic or the games’ market value. Also consider whether you would have bought or played those games anyway.

Extra or Premium may be worthwhile if you would play enough of their added features to justify the price difference. Compare the incremental cost with the specific catalog games you want to play; count Premium’s classics, trials, and streaming only if you expect to use them. A higher tier does not make the monthly-game benefit itself more valuable.
Do you keep PlayStation Plus monthly games forever?
No—not as unrestricted purchases. You can add monthly games to your library and play them while you have an active PlayStation Plus membership. Monthly games are different from catalog games. Monthly games are claimed for your library and remain playable with an active membership. Extra and Premium catalog games are available through the catalog, and some leave the service; access to a departing catalog title may end. PlayStation Plus Game Catalog information
Can you play claimed PS Plus games without a subscription?
No. The monthly-game benefit requires an active membership to play, even if you previously added the game to your library. If you stop subscribing, you lose access to those games while the membership is inactive; access returns if you resume an eligible membership. PlayStation Plus monthly games information

Should online multiplayer count toward the value?
Count it only if you play games that require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer. Sony says most PS4 and PS5 games require Plus for online multiplayer, but some do not, so check the requirement for each game you play. PlayStation Plus online multiplayer information If you already subscribe for multiplayer, the monthly games can be an additional benefit; if you subscribe only for monthly games, multiplayer is optional value rather than a reason to assume the cost pays for itself.

- Check the current price and billing period shown for your account. Sony says subscriptions renew automatically until canceled, so include renewal timing in your decision. PlayStation Plus plans and pricing
- Look at a typical year of monthly offerings and count only the titles you would realistically play—not every game available to claim.
- Divide the annual Essential price by that count for a rough cost per game you expect to play. If you prefer another billing period, use its current price instead.
- Add value for other benefits only when you use them, such as multiplayer in games that require Plus, cloud storage, discounts, or Share Play.
- Consider Extra or Premium only if their added catalog or Premium-only features are worth their incremental cost to you.
If the monthly games rarely interest you or you expect to play very few, renewing may not make sense. You can cancel or choose a shorter practical billing period, but do not assume cancellation guarantees a refund: the cited PlayStation information establishes recurring billing and membership-based access, not a general refund entitlement.

What if you mainly play on PS4?
Sony’s current U.S. page says PS4 games will be added to monthly games only intermittently from January 2026. That does not mean PS4 monthly games have stopped, but a PS4-focused subscriber should factor in the less regular additions when estimating how often the lineup will appeal.
