In the U.S., Essential covers core membership benefits, including monthly games and online multiplayer for games that require Plus. Extra adds the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming, along with lower-tier benefits. Choose based on the games and features you will actually use: a higher tier is not automatically better value.
What each PlayStation Plus tier includes
Sony’s U.S. plan pages describe the tiers as cumulative: Extra includes Essential benefits, and Premium includes the lower-tier benefits. Catalog contents and the availability of some features can change, and benefits can differ by territory. See Sony’s current PlayStation Plus plans for the U.S. offering.

| Essential | Monthly games, online multiplayer where a game requires Plus, cloud storage, Share Play, discounts, and other core benefits. | Players who want core membership benefits, especially monthly games or multiplayer access. |
| Extra | Essential benefits, plus the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. Sony describes the Game Catalog as hundreds of games; its selection changes over time. | Players who want a rotating library of included games and have checked that the titles they want are currently available. |
| Premium | Extra and Essential benefits, plus the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming. Sony’s U.S. pages also list the Sony Pictures Catalog. | Players who specifically want the classics, trials, or supported streaming features. |
Do you need PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer?
All three tiers include online multiplayer benefits, but Plus is not required for every game. PlayStation support says, “In order to play most PS4 and PS5 games in online multiplayer, you need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription.” Some games with online multiplayer do not require it, so check the individual game’s PlayStation Store listing. How the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog work
The Game Catalog is Extra’s main distinction, while Premium adds the Classics Catalog. These are subscription catalogs, not permanent purchases: access depends on an active membership and whether a title remains available. A game can leave a catalog, so verify a particular title’s current status before choosing a plan around it. Sony’s games and membership FAQ explains catalog access and related conditions.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
DLC or add-ons associated with a catalog game may become unusable if the membership ends or the base game leaves the service. Cloud streaming does not support DLC or add-ons.
What Premium cloud streaming supports
Cloud streaming is a Premium benefit, but supported games, devices, and territories vary. Sony’s U.S. FAQ describes streaming on PS4, PS5, and PC, and selected streaming to PS5 or PlayStation Portal; those details should not be assumed to apply worldwide. Sony’s current plan page says streaming requires at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p. Check Sony’s U.S. streaming FAQ and plan page for supported options and requirements.

Which plan should you choose?
- Choose Essential if you mainly need monthly games, online multiplayer for a game that requires Plus, or other core benefits.
- Consider Extra if you want the Game Catalog or Ubisoft+ Classics. Check that the games you care about are currently included.
- Consider Premium if you will use the Classics Catalog, game trials, or cloud streaming, and those features are supported where and how you play.
Before subscribing, compare the specific benefits you expect to use with the price and payment term shown for your account. Sony’s U.S. membership pages direct customers to sign in to see plan options, and the available price can depend on term, offer, account, and territory; there is no single price comparison established here for all three tiers. Review the current PlayStation Store listing before purchase.
Cloud storage, sharing, and PS4 catalog changes
Sony’s current U.S. support page lists 100 GB of cloud storage for PS5 and PS4 saves across the plans. Sony also says a membership is tied to the account, though selected benefits can be shared on a primary PS4 or one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled. See PlayStation Plus support for the details.

Sony’s notice says that starting in January 2026, PS4 titles will be added less regularly to monthly game lineups and Game Catalog updates. It does not say that PS4 titles have stopped appearing. Sony’s important notice

Sony’s U.S. information says subscriptions renew automatically until canceled; the purchase flow shows the price and renewal frequency. Check those details before confirming, and review Sony’s current membership information.

A PlayStation Store gift card is an optional way to add funds to a wallet, not a requirement to subscribe. Sony’s U.S. terms say wallet funds may be used to renew a subscription, and its support page explains how to redeem a Store voucher. A Plus subscription voucher is different: it specifies a plan and term and may convert existing membership time. See Sony’s Terms of Service, voucher redemption guide, and PlayStation Plus vouchers guide.
