Ralsei introduces himself as a prince and becomes Kris and Susie’s guide and party member. His habit of putting their needs first makes “lackey” a provocative interpretation of his behavior—not a confirmed title, relationship, or secret allegiance.
What Ralsei’s role is in the story
Ralsei introduces himself as the “Prince of this Kingdom,” tells Kris and Susie about the prophecy, and helps guide their journey. The chapter descriptions present him as a prince and a member of the heroes’ party, not as someone identified as their servant. The Ralsei character reference and the Chapter 1 reference document those roles.
He also takes initiative: he prepares a manual and tutorial, helps the group, and makes rooms for Kris and Susie. Those actions fit a helpful guide and friend. They can also invite questions about how much of his identity is built around serving other people.
Why some players read him as a lackey
The interpretation comes from Ralsei’s persistent deference and self-effacing remarks, rather than from an explicit order or reveal. He focuses on Kris and Susie’s needs, and one Chapter 4 line makes that pattern unusually direct:

“I don’t really have any hobbies, or interests. Baking, sewing, singing… those are all just… Things I thought to do… for you two.”
The line can suggest that Ralsei struggles to name personal interests apart from what he can do for his friends. It might reflect a desire to please, an identity still taking shape, or a purpose tied to helping them. On its own, it does not establish that he is coerced or lacks agency. The quote is transcribed in the Ralsei dialogue reference.

What the King scene does—and does not—show
In Chapter 1, the King appears to surrender. Ralsei responds by healing him, and the King immediately betrays the party. The chapter transcript describes Ralsei’s healing spell enveloping the King in a warm, green light.
The scene shows that Ralsei can trust an apparent appeal for peace and that his mercy can be exploited. It does not show that he knowingly obeys the King, serves him, or has advance knowledge of the betrayal.

Canon versus theory
“Lackey” implies a subordinate who carries out someone else’s orders. The story references establish Ralsei’s stated role as a prince and party guide; the behaviors above are open to interpretation, but they do not confirm that subordinate relationship.
Likewise, the official Deltarune character guide describes Ralsei as a prince who “knows more than he lets on.” That wording reinforces his mystery, but it does not confirm that he is an antagonist or secretly serving another character. Treat claims about a hidden allegiance as theory, not established canon.

How to judge the competing readings
| Question | What the story establishes | What remains interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| What is Ralsei’s stated position? | He calls himself a prince and joins the heroes as their guide. | Whether that role hides a subordinate relationship. |
| Does he show agency? | He initiates guidance and acts to help Kris and Susie. | Whether his eagerness to help means he neglects his own wants. |
| What does his hobbies line mean? | He says the activities he considered were things he thought to do for his friends. | Whether that reflects self-effacement, a developing identity, or another motive. |
| What does the King encounter prove? | Ralsei heals the King after an apparent surrender; the King then attacks. | Whether Ralsei’s trust has a deeper explanation. The scene itself does not establish one. |
| Has the lackey theory been confirmed? | No confirmation is established by the cited story references or character guide. | Players can continue to speculate, provided the theory is labeled as such. |
The most careful reading is that Ralsei’s kindness and willingness to put others first are real parts of his characterization, while the reasons behind them remain uncertain. Calling him a lackey captures one possible concern about that behavior, not a settled answer about who he serves.
