Ray tracing is already available in Minecraft Bedrock Edition for Windows on compatible PCs. It is not listed as a Java Edition feature, and the official pages reviewed do not give a release date for Java ray tracing. Bedrock’s separate Vibrant Visuals feature is planned for Java, but that plan is not confirmation that the same ray-tracing feature is coming.

Does Minecraft Java have ray tracing?

No official Java Edition ray-tracing feature or release date is established by the available official information. Minecraft’s PC edition comparison lists ray tracing for Bedrock, not Java. That is distinct from community-made Java shader packs, which can change how the game looks but are not the built-in Bedrock ray-tracing implementation. NVIDIA described that distinction in a 2019 launch-era explainer; it is historical context, not a current roadmap announcement: NVIDIA’s Minecraft ray-tracing explanation.

Where is Minecraft ray tracing available?

The officially supported feature is ray tracing in Minecraft Bedrock Edition for Windows. Minecraft’s PC edition comparison identifies Bedrock as the edition with ray tracing and says it requires a DXR-capable graphics card: Minecraft Java and Bedrock edition comparison.

Microsoft Learn describes Bedrock ray tracing as path-traced rendering. In practice, it is not automatically enabled in every world: the effect relies on compatible content, including worlds and resource packs with physically based rendering (PBR) materials. Qualifying Windows players can find ray-tracing worlds in the Marketplace, according to Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock ray-tracing documentation.

What PC hardware does Bedrock ray tracing require?

Minecraft Help specifies a DirectX hardware ray-tracing-capable GPU for Bedrock on Windows. Its examples are NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20 Series and higher, and AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series and higher. Those are compatibility examples, not a recommendation that everyone buy a new graphics card. Check the current requirements and your full PC configuration before upgrading: Minecraft Help: Ray Tracing FAQ.

Ray tracing also depends on supported worlds or resource packs. If your hardware qualifies but a world does not include compatible PBR assets, you should not expect the feature to work there.

Is Vibrant Visuals the same as ray tracing?

No. Vibrant Visuals is a separate official graphics enhancement for compatible Bedrock devices. Minecraft says Java support is planned, but its page provides no release date and does not say that Java will receive the Windows Bedrock ray-tracing implementation. The page lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Android, iOS, and PC, with device-specific conditions; on PC, Minecraft must run on DX12. It also describes Vibrant Visuals as cosmetic and identifies a graphics-mode dropdown setting: Minecraft: Vibrant Visuals.

A 2026 GDC rendering presentation says Vibrant Visuals reuses some components associated with Minecraft RTX, including parts of the PBR asset pipeline and G-buffer work. Shared technical components do not make the features identical or establish a Java RTX release: GDC 2026: Rendering Minecraft’s Vibrant Visuals.

So, is ray tracing coming to Minecraft Java or consoles?

For Java, the official information establishes a plan for Vibrant Visuals, not a date or promise for the same Windows Bedrock ray-tracing feature. For consoles and other Bedrock devices, Vibrant Visuals availability does not establish that they support Windows Bedrock RTX. Treat the future of that specific ray-tracing implementation on Java and consoles as unconfirmed.
