Is ReShade Safe to Use? Malware, Crashes, and Ban Risks Explained

The official ReShade build is generally safe for single-player use, but online-game rules, third-party files, crashes, and anti-cheat behavior can change the risk.

ReShade is generally safe when you download the standard build from the official site and use it with trusted shaders—but that does not make it safe for every game. The main risks are unofficial downloads, crashes or performance loss, and a game’s anti-cheat or rules blocking it or penalizing its use. For single-player games, the practical risk is usually low; for online games, check that specific game’s current policy before installing or launching ReShade.

What ReShade does—and why it can look suspicious

ReShade is a post-processing tool that applies visual effects such as sharpening, color correction, ambient occlusion, depth of field, film grain, and HDR-style adjustments. It supports Direct3D 9–12, OpenGL, and Vulkan. To do its job, it hooks into a game’s graphics pipeline and loads files from the game directory. That describes how it works; it does not, by itself, mean ReShade is malware or a cheat.

The official site lists ReShade 6.7.3, released February 28, 2026, and says the standard build disables access to depth information during multiplayer. That restriction is not a guarantee about modified builds, third-party add-ons, or what an individual game permits. ReShade’s official site also lists Windows requirements and supported graphics APIs.

Is the official ReShade installer malware?

The official ReShade project is open source under the BSD 3-Clause license, and its source code is available in the project’s GitHub repository. The official site publishes an X.509 signature thumbprint for its installer. These details help verify provenance, but they do not make files from mirrors, repackaged bundles, or third parties trustworthy.

Download from reshade.me or the official project repository. Check the address carefully and avoid installers advertised as “preconfigured” unless you have independently established that every included file is trustworthy.

If antivirus warns you

Because ReShade hooks into a game and loads DLL files, security software may flag it heuristically or because a new release has not yet built a strong reputation. ReShade’s troubleshooting guidance describes such warnings, but that does not prove that every file named ReShade is safe. Do not turn off antivirus protection or create a broad, permanent exclusion just to install it.

  • Confirm that the download came from the official domain, then scan the exact file with your security software.
  • Check the file’s digital signature against the information on the official site where available. Do not rely on a filename alone.
  • If several reputable security tools flag the same file, stop and investigate rather than assuming it is a false positive.
  • Avoid unknown DLLs, executables, add-ons, or password-protected archives bundled with a preset.

Can ReShade get you banned?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer: the game’s current policy and anti-cheat behavior matter more than a general claim about ReShade. A game might allow it, block launch, or prohibit it—and those outcomes are not the same. A blocked launch does not automatically mean an account ban, but a game’s rules can carry consequences beyond startup failure.

A ReShade developer’s historical forum guidance said versions from 4.3.0 onward had been whitelisted by Easy Anti-Cheat, while also noting that individual games could explicitly prohibit or block them. That statement is not a current guarantee for every EAC game. Read the original discussion, and treat the game publisher’s current policy as controlling.

Rust is an explicit exception

Facepunch says Rust banned ReShade beginning January 13, 2025. Its support instructions tell affected players to remove ReShade files from the Rust directory and verify the game files. Do not launch Rust with ReShade installed in its game folder; follow Facepunch’s Rust instructions.

VAC and other competitive games

Valve’s general VAC guidance says third-party modifications designed to give one player an advantage over another can trigger a VAC ban. It is not a ReShade-specific approval or whitelist. A cosmetic effect may not be intended as an advantage, but neither the player nor a generic ReShade compatibility claim can substitute for a game-specific policy. Valve’s VAC guidance is a reason to check the game’s rules, not evidence that ordinary post-processing is approved in every VAC-enabled title.

What changes the risk

  • Where ReShade is installed: An installer stored elsewhere is different from ReShade files in a game directory, and both differ from ReShade actively loaded by a game. The practical concern is whether the target game can find or load it; do not treat mere separation as a policy guarantee.
  • What is loaded: The standard build is not the same as an unofficial fork, modified DLL, or add-on that reads or changes game data. ReShade’s forum discussion of depth restrictions explains why modified builds can create different multiplayer and anti-cheat risks: depth access and modified builds.
  • What the effect does: Effects that add a crosshair, zoom, enemy highlighting, or visibility information can create a competitive advantage or violate a game’s rules. Do not try renamed DLLs or modified builds to get around an anti-cheat block.

When is ReShade a reasonable choice?

Situation Practical verdict
Official, unmodified ReShade in a single-player or offline game Usually a reasonable choice if you trust the shaders and accept possible performance or stability issues.
A game whose publisher explicitly permits ReShade Use the permitted build and features, and recheck the policy if the game or its anti-cheat changes.
An online game with unclear policy Do not assume it is safe; check the game’s current support or rules before launching.
A game that blocks or prohibits ReShade Remove it from that game’s directory and follow the publisher’s instructions.
Modified build, unknown add-on, or bundled executable Avoid it; its security and anti-cheat behavior cannot be inferred from the official build.

If losing a high-value account, tournament eligibility, or access to purchased items would be costly, require clear permission from the game’s publisher rather than relying on community reports or an anti-cheat whitelist claim.

How to install ReShade with less risk

  1. Download the standard installer from the official ReShade site. Prefer the standard build over full add-on support unless you specifically need an add-on and trust its source.
  2. Run the setup tool and select the correct game executable. If prompted, choose the graphics API the game actually uses. The official troubleshooting guide highlights wrong executables and APIs as common causes of problems.
  3. Install only the shader packages you need. ReShade’s site says not to redistribute its binaries or shader files; prefer sources that direct you to the official distribution rather than supplying repackaged files.
  4. Keep presets and downloads outside the game folder until you know what they contain. A preset can reference shader files, textures, LUTs, or other dependencies; treat bundled DLLs, add-ons, and executables as higher risk than configuration files.
  5. Test first in an offline or single-player session, enabling effects one at a time. Do not test in a prohibited or policy-unclear competitive game.

ReShade effects can also be inappropriate for competitive play even when the standard build restricts depth access in multiplayer. Avoid depth-based, visibility-enhancing, zoom, or crosshair effects unless that game explicitly permits them.

Crashes, conflicts, and performance

ReShade does not replace a system-wide graphics driver, but its game-directory files can affect startup and rendering. Common problems include a black screen, crash, missing or incorrect effects, visual artifacts, or trouble after a game update. The official troubleshooting material also notes conflicts with tools such as MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner, and problems caused by selecting the wrong executable or graphics API.

Performance impact depends on the game, resolution, GPU, shader complexity, and number of effects. Simple color adjustments or sharpening may be relatively light; ambient occlusion, depth of field, high-quality anti-aliasing, ray-traced effects, and multiple shader passes can cost more. There is no reliable universal FPS penalty: enable effects individually and watch both frame rate and frame-time consistency.

  • If the game crashes, remove or rename ReShade’s files and confirm the unmodified game launches before troubleshooting further.
  • If the game worked and then began failing after an update, consider a stale ReShade file, incompatible shader, wrong API, or a conflict with an overlay or monitoring tool.
  • If an anti-cheat error appears, remove ReShade and consult the game’s official policy. Do not bypass detection.
  • If a preset looks wrong, check its required shader repository, textures or LUTs, game version, graphics API, and effect order. Depth-dependent effects do not work in every title.

ReShade’s guides cover common installation and compatibility issues and API and effect troubleshooting.

How to uninstall ReShade

The simplest route is to run the ReShade setup tool again, select the same game executable and graphics API, and choose its uninstall option if offered. If you remove files manually, work in that game’s directory and delete only files you can identify as belonging to ReShade.

Depending on the graphics API and installation, ReShade-related files may include ReShade.ini, a preset .ini, the reshade-shaders folder, or one of d3d9.dll, d3d10.dll, d3d11.dll, dxgi.dll, or opengl32.dll. Do not delete a DLL merely because it appears on this list: the game may have its own file with the same name. The ReShade troubleshooting guide describes the files to check.

  1. After uninstalling, launch the game to confirm it starts without ReShade.
  2. If it still fails, use Steam, Epic Games Store, or the relevant launcher’s file-verification feature.
  3. If the game’s anti-cheat continues to report an issue, follow the publisher’s support instructions rather than trying a different or renamed injector.

Verdict by player type

  • Single-player gamer: The official standard build is generally a reasonable visual mod if the download and shaders are trusted.
  • Competitive multiplayer gamer: Use ReShade only when the game’s current rules clearly allow it; unclear policy is not permission.
  • Player with a high-value account: Avoid it unless the publisher explicitly permits the relevant build and use.
  • Player seeing an antivirus warning: Verify the source and signature, investigate multiple detections, and do not blindly disable protection.
