Hallowed Concepts is most worth buying if you already enjoy replaying Risk of Rain 2 and want new survivors, stages, Trials, and a system that trades risk for power. If you mainly want the October 8 free update, or want to wait for more than a first-day reception snapshot before spending, the paid expansion is easier to hold off on. Here’s what the DLC actually adds—and what co-op players need to know.
What Hallowed Concepts adds
The expansion builds around new ways to play and more variety across runs. Its main additions include two survivors, a set of new stages and Trials, and the N’tormat Curio and item systems, which tie stronger abilities to costs and trade-offs.

The official product description presents Acolyte as a close-range glaive fighter who can also strike at range, bargaining with her life force. Enforcer is a defensive vanguard built around tactical movement. Trials focus on endurance, hunting, and racing against time. Together, those additions make the DLC’s core appeal a different risk-and-reward layer, rather than simply adding more upgrades.

Buy it if you want new runs to explore
If you already enjoy the game’s repeated-run structure, the strongest case for Hallowed Concepts is the combination of two new characters, extra stages, Trials, and items with meaningful trade-offs. It offers new approaches to runs and more variety, rather than just a one-time story experience.

Wait if you mostly want the free update
The October 8 update also adds unlockable skills for Commando, Huntress, Acrid, Artificer, Engineer, and REX, along with an optional Karma system that can make the final moon confrontation more challenging. Official notes list these as base-game or prior-DLC updates, separate from purchasable Hallowed Concepts content. They are not part of the paid expansion’s value.
Consider waiting for a longer reception window
Steam showed 90% positive from 371 user reviews on October 9, 2026, and classified the DLC’s reviews as “Very Positive.” That is an encouraging but very early snapshot from roughly one day after launch. It cannot establish long-term balance, performance on consoles, or the experience of players who have not reviewed the DLC.

The official launch notes confirm availability on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, but do not establish measured performance or platform parity. If crashes, frame rate, or bugs would affect your decision, check current reports for your own platform before buying. The DLC requires the base game; check the current price and availability in your region and storefront, since prices and review counts can change.

On Steam, one player owning Hallowed Concepts enables its monsters, levels, and items to appear in the lobby’s game. Players without the expansion cannot select its new survivors or permanently unlock its items, logbooks, or other content. That can let a group encounter some of the shared additions together with one owner, while anyone who wants the full unlock progression needs their own copy. The Steam listing establishes this rule for Steam; verify the policy on your platform before relying on it.
