Short answer: the available security signals for romsfun.com conflict, so neither a clean-looking domain scan nor a suspicious-URL report can certify a particular download as safe or malicious. Verify the exact hostname, treat unexpected files and redirects as warning signs, and do not assume that owning a game makes downloading a separate copy legal where you live.
What the security reports say about romsfun.com
Two automated reports point in different directions, and they do not measure the same thing:
| Report | Finding | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| PCrisk | Its 2026 scan snapshot reports 1 of 91 security engines flagged romsfun.com, with no significant threats detected at the time. | A domain scan snapshot. It is not a guarantee about every page, redirect, or downloaded file. The report does not give a clear publication date in the available result. |
| URLert | Its 2026 report snapshot says 6 of 8 recent URLs it analyzed from romsfun.com were flagged as suspicious or malicious. | Sampled URLs, including examples from ROM and download paths. It does not establish that all files or pages are infected; the individual URLs have different relative scan ages. |
These counts are not a head-to-head test: one is a domain-oriented scan snapshot and the other concerns a small sample of URLs. Automated scanners can produce warnings worth investigating, but neither result verifies the contents of a specific ROM image. The available reports do not establish that a particular file is safe or infected.
Check the hostname and the file before opening anything
The RomsFun name is used on more than one domain. This assessment concerns romsfun.com and pages on roms-fun.com that identify themselves as RomsFun. A separate report about romsfun.me concerns a different hostname and should not be applied to romsfun.com. Check the address bar carefully; if a download redirects to another domain, assess that destination separately.

A disc image for an emulator should not require an unrelated installer or script to play. Stop rather than proceed if the apparent download is an unexpected executable, asks you to disable security protection, or prompts you to install a browser extension or enable notifications. Do not treat an advertisement or redirect as the ROM itself.
A Reddit user described running a Python file while seeking a ROM and later having account and payment problems. The thread does not independently establish whether that file came from an official RomsFun download, an advertisement, a redirect, or another source, so it is an anecdote—not proof that RomsFun caused the incident or that the site distributes malware.

What RomsFun says about its catalogue and downloads
RomsFun describes itself as a reference catalogue for disc-era console games, with listing details such as console, region, image format, publisher, and emulator notes. Its About page says it does not promise that a listed image is an official retail disc and does not claim to own, license, or broadly distribute the games named on its pages. These are statements from the site, not independent verification of the files or links.
According to its FAQ, a download starts from a game page, passes an access check, waits ten seconds, and then presents a one-time link. The FAQ says some listings include a SHA-1 hash for comparison and that other listings have no hash. A matching hash can show that a file matches the value shown on that listing, but it cannot establish that the listing’s hash is trustworthy, that the file is safe to run, or that downloading it is lawful.

Is downloading ROMs from RomsFun legal?
RomsFun’s FAQ answers its legality question with: “It depends on where you live and whether you own the original disc.” That is the site’s own caveat, not legal advice or a universal rule. Owning a disc does not by itself establish that downloading a separate copy is lawful in every jurisdiction; the answer depends on local law and the facts. This article does not determine the law for a particular reader.
Copyright enforcement against other ROM-distribution operators has occurred. A 2022 WIPO paper discusses Nintendo’s 2018 actions involving LoveROMS.com and LoveRETRO.co, which ended in a consent judgment and permanent injunction, and 2021 findings involving the operator of romuniverse.com. WIPO describes findings based on that defendant’s conduct, including uploading and making Nintendo ROM files available. Those examples concern different operators; they are not a court ruling about RomsFun or a determination about every game, copy, or country.
