Leaked participant-facing material was reported to describe cooperative planet-building, while Nintendo’s stated purpose was to test a new feature for its online service. The test was scheduled for October 24 to November 6, 2024, and has ended.
What was Nintendo’s mysterious Switch game?
It was exclusive software for the Nintendo Switch Online: Playtest Program. Nintendo described the program as a test “related to a new feature for the Nintendo Switch Online service offered for the Nintendo Switch™ system,” according to wording reproduced by Nintendo Life. That framing makes this a service-feature test—not an official announcement of a new game for sale.
Selected participants were to download the software and take part in the test. Contemporary coverage said applicants needed an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership; reported eligibility also required participants to be at least 18 and to have a Nintendo Account registered in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, or Spain.
What did the leaked material reportedly describe?
Reports about participant-facing information described a cooperative online experience in which players worked together to develop a massive planet using creativity and gathered resources. Those mechanics came from leaked material as reported at the time, not from a retail-game reveal or a public confirmation by Nintendo. The sources do not establish whether the software would ever become a standalone game or what Nintendo ultimately intended to learn from the test.

How quickly did the leak happen?
The “about 2 seconds” wording comes from IGN’s headline; the available sources do not verify that as a measured interval. What they support is that information about the software circulated before the test began, and that participants posted screenshots and video and streamed the build once the test went live. Nintendo Life reported that copyright takedowns appeared to follow those posts and streams.
Participants had been instructed not to discuss or disclose the test’s contents. That restriction helps explain why public footage drew attention, but it does not make the leaked description an official account of the software’s eventual status.

Why did applications fill so fast?
Nintendo Life reported that the program had 10,000 application places and that registration filled seven minutes after applications opened on October 10, 2024. Those are reported application details, not a measure of total demand or evidence about how many people were ultimately selected.
Applicants needed the Expansion Pack membership, and the program offered a chance to try exclusive software in a limited test. The combination of a small reported number of places and an unusual, largely unexplained test was enough to make the sign-up window brief; the reporting does not identify a single cause for the rapid response.
