Shield-Weaver is arguably the best all-around defensive outfit in Horizon Zero Dawn once you unlock it, especially on lower difficulties—but it is not the best choice for every fight or playstyle. Its rechargeable shield can absorb incoming damage, while specialized outfits may serve you better when you need stealth or protection from a particular element.
What makes Shield-Weaver so strong?
Shield-Weaver is different from a conventional outfit built around resistance values. Its ancient technology projects a shield that absorbs damage while charged. Once depleted, the shield needs time to recharge, leaving Aloy without that protection in the meantime. Game8 reports that the outfit has no base resistances and no modification slots (Game8’s Shield-Weaver stats and resistance guide).

Pro Game Guides also reports that ranged attacks cannot stagger Aloy while she is wearing the outfit. That is a guide-reported benefit, rather than an independently verified game-data figure (Pro Game Guides’ Shield-Weaver guide).
How much damage can its shield absorb?
Pro Game Guides gives the following shield-absorption values by difficulty. These are that guide’s reported figures, not values confirmed here against primary game data.

The lower reported capacity on harder difficulties makes the outfit less of a universal safety net: a shield that absorbs several hits on Normal may be depleted much sooner on Ultra Hard. In any difficulty, a depleted shield’s recharge delay matters. If you take another hit before it returns, Shield-Weaver’s special protection is unavailable.
When another outfit is a better choice
Shield-Weaver’s strength is broad damage absorption, not tailored resistance. If you are facing a specific elemental threat, an outfit with relevant elemental protection may be more useful. If you want to approach enemies without drawing attention, a stealth-focused outfit may suit that plan better. Gamers Decide describes these as distinct outfit roles rather than a single setup that excels at everything (Gamers Decide’s outfit overview).

- Consider elemental protection when a particular elemental threat is the main danger.
- Consider stealth when avoiding detection matters more than absorbing hits.
- Look at modification slots if you want to tune an outfit; Shield-Weaver has none, according to Game8.
How to unlock Shield-Weaver
The outfit is not available at the start. You must find five Power Cells and complete the Ancient Armory side quest. Guides from Game8 and PC Gamer describe the Power Cell requirement and quest context (Game8; PC Gamer’s Ancient Armory guide).
Because the outfit is gated behind exploration and quest progress, it is best treated as a strong goal to pursue as you play—not gear you can count on from the opening hours. A route-focused walkthrough is useful if you want exact Power Cell locations and puzzle steps; the comparison here does not rely on a particular route.

So, is Shield-Weaver the best?
For a player who has unlocked it and wants one outfit for general defense, Shield-Weaver is a strong contender, particularly on Normal. Its value is less absolute on higher difficulties, where the reported absorption falls, and it cannot provide the tailored resistance or stealth role of specialized outfits. The practical choice depends on the difficulty, the threat in front of you, and whether the shield is charged when you need it.
