Silent Hill: The Short Message is a short horror game that Konami announced on January 31, 2024. The publisher describes it as a complete story independent of previous and upcoming Silent Hill titles. PlayStation presents it as a modern Silent Hill experience exclusive to PS5.

That standalone setup makes the game accessible to people who have not played the rest of the series. It also means its approach should not be taken as a template for the franchise as a whole.
Is it really a carbon copy of the series’ best?
No—not on the evidence available. Konami framed the release as an experiment, not as a recreation of a particular earlier game or a benchmark for the series. Producer Motoi Okamoto explained on PlayStation.Blog: “But being as this is still an experimental title, it was our plan from the beginning to release it for free, so that as many people as possible could play it.”

Reviews also give readers reason to qualify the comparison. Push Square criticizes the gameplay as bland and the chase sequences as frustrating. Metacritic’s critic-review page reflects mixed responses, including criticism of the metaphor and chase design. Those are reviewers’ assessments, not a universal verdict on how every player will respond.
The useful comparison is about scope and structure: this is an independent short experiment with a gameplay approach that has drawn criticism. The available sources do not establish an objective series-wide ranking or support calling it equivalent to a specific “best” entry.

Is it a good introduction to Silent Hill?
It can serve as an accessible first contact because its story stands alone and the game is free to access on PS5. Treat it as one distinct, short experience rather than a representative sample.
