Riot Games’ fighting game once known as Project L is called 2XKO. It has since launched as a free-to-play 2v2 tag-team fighter for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but Riot now says active development will end in December 2026. Here’s what the name announcement led to—and what players can expect from the game now.

Project L became 2XKO

Riot announced the new name in February 2024. Tom Cannon, then Senior Director and Executive Producer for Project L, introduced it with the line, “First things first: we have a name! Project L is now officially 2XKO.” Riot’s 2024 name announcement also discussed the team’s plans for demos and playtesting and aimed at a 2025 launch. That was a forecast at the time, not the game’s current release status.

2XKO is now a released, free-to-play fighting game built around 2v2 tag-team matches and champions from League of Legends and Arcane. Riot lists PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as supported platforms. You can control both champions yourself or team up with another player. Riot’s game page describes the game, though some of its general feature information may not reflect changes made later in 2026.

What does ending active development mean?

Riot announced on August 20, 2026 that it plans to end active development in December 2026. Its stated plan includes a final bug-fix patch in December, with no patches planned after 2026 ends. Riot says servers will remain online beyond 2026 and that offline play will be unaffected. These are Riot’s current plans, not a guarantee that online service will continue indefinitely. Riot’s announcement explains the change.

Riot says it considered revenue, player retention, activity from new players and engagement. The company reported no meaningful sustained change in the game’s trajectory, operating costs substantially above revenue, and relatively flat engagement despite larger updates. Riot did not publish audited financial figures, player counts or retention percentages alongside that explanation, so those statements should be understood as the company’s account rather than independently verified measurements. Riot’s transition FAQ gives further detail.

Which modes and features remain?

Riot’s transition FAQ says these modes remain available: Casual, Tutorial, The Climb and Offline. Casual matchmaking remains skill-based. The FAQ is the more specific source for post-transition features; the game page’s general description of a ranked ladder may not reflect the changes below.

These are the prices and contents Riot stated in its August 2026 transition FAQ; the bundle is digital content, not a physical boxed edition. See Riot’s FAQ for the transition details.

What about 2XKO tournaments?

Riot’s 2026 Competitive Series was organized by the community, with Riot sanctioning 20 events: five Majors and 15 Challengers. Riot’s transition FAQ says the final official event in the series is scheduled for November 2026. Community-run tournaments may continue under Riot’s standard competition guidelines; that is distinct from an ongoing Riot-operated league. Riot’s 2026 series announcement sets out the event format.

Do you need a fightstick to play?

No. A fightstick is an optional input choice, not a requirement. Riot’s supported-device list includes the Hori Fighting Stick Alpha for PS5 and in PC mode, along with devices such as the Razer Kitsune, DualSense and Xbox controller. Riot says the short list covers devices tested each release and that most devices other than Nintendo Switch controllers should work. The list is dated May 20, 2026 and may change. Check Riot’s supported-device page for the current list before choosing a controller.
