Not yet—at least, not by the clearest available measure. Starfield’s free Free Lanes update and paid Terran Armada expansion brought a sharp spike in Steam activity in April 2026, but Steam’s monthly average fell over the following months. The update meaningfully expands what players can do; the evidence so far shows renewed attention, not a durable, all-platform revival.
What Free Lanes and Terran Armada add
Free Lanes and Terran Armada arrived on April 7, 2026, but they are different products: one is a free game update, the other a paid story expansion. Bethesda calls Free Lanes its most expansive free update yet. Its biggest change is Cruise Mode, which lets players travel between planets within a star system and take part in ship activities while in transit. Travel can also surface new points of interest and events. The update adds X-Tech for equipment and ship customization, new legendary effects and quality tiers, ship optimization, outpost additions, and other improvements. Bethesda’s feature breakdown describes the full set of changes.

Terran Armada costs $9.99 according to Bethesda’s launch announcement. It adds a story centered on a robotic military faction, a companion named Delta, new gear and ship parts, and recurring Incursions across the Settled Systems. These encounters can involve space or surface combat, and an active Incursion can constrain grav-jump travel. In an Xbox Wire interview, lead creative producer Tim Lamb explains how Cruise Mode can help players approach or avoid some Incursions.
Shattered Space is a separate, earlier paid expansion, released September 30, 2024. Neither expansion is the Free Lanes overhaul, and neither should be treated as a comprehensive rewrite of the base game. The Steam DLC listing identifies the two expansions and their release dates.

What changed for returning players?
Travel has more to do
Cruise Mode targets a specific part of Starfield’s loop: moving around within a star system. The addition of encounters and ship activities gives that stretch of play more potential to become an activity rather than simply a transition. Players who wanted more involvement in space travel have a concrete reason to try the game again.
Progression and repeatable activity have more layers
X-Tech, equipment effects, quality tiers, ship optimization, and new parts add more ways to refine a character’s kit and ship. Incursions provide recurring combat activity, with the possibility of encounters in space or on a planetary surface. Together, these systems broaden the things available to pursue, rather than replacing Starfield’s core structure.
The paid expansion adds a different kind of reason to return
Terran Armada combines a new faction story with a repeatable activity loop. That makes it a more direct fit for players who want new narrative content and ongoing encounters, while Free Lanes is the no-cost place to start for anyone chiefly interested in the systems and travel changes.

Did the update revive Starfield?
Steam activity rose sharply in the update’s launch month, then receded. SteamCharts reported the following monthly average concurrent-player counts for Starfield on Steam; April’s peak is shown separately:
| Month | Average concurrent Steam players | Peak concurrent Steam players |
|---|---|---|
| March 2026 | 3,506.06 | Not stated by SteamCharts in the cited figures |
| April 2026 | 12,200.85 | 30,107 |
| May 2026 | 7,283.78 | Not stated by SteamCharts in the cited figures |
| June 2026 | 4,389.16 | Not stated by SteamCharts in the cited figures |
| July 2026 | 3,970.92 | Not stated by SteamCharts in the cited figures |
| August 2026 | 4,172.01 | Not stated by SteamCharts in the cited figures |
| September 2026 | 3,352.47 | Not stated by SteamCharts in the cited figures |
These are SteamCharts figures, not unique-player totals. The April jump is substantial, but the average fell by May and was lower again by September. That pattern supports a strong launch-month return spike, not proof that the game sustained a new level of activity.
The figures cover Steam only. They do not establish sales, engagement, or retention on Xbox or PlayStation, and they cannot show whether the game is commercially successful across platforms. Bethesda’s official breakdown says Starfield is also available on PlayStation 5, but no comparable all-platform retention measure is established here.

- TELL YOUR STORY - In Starfield the most important story is the one you tell with your character. Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits. Will you be an experienced explorer, a charming diplomat, a stealthy cyber runner, or something else entirely? The choice is yours. Decide who you will be and what you will become.
- EXPLORE OUTER SPACE - Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets. Navigate bustling cities, explore dangerous bases, and traverse wild landscapes. Meet and recruit a memorable cast of characters, join in the adventures of various factions, and embark on quests across the Settled Systems. A new story or experience is always waiting to be discovered.
- CAPTAIN THE SHIP OF YOUR DREAMS - Pilot and command the ship of your dreams. Personalize the look of your ship, modify critical systems including weapons and shields, and assign crew members to provide unique bonuses. In deep space you will engage in high-stakes dogfights, encounter random missions, dock at star stations, and even board and commandeer enemy ships to add to your collection.
- DISCOVER, COLLECT, BUILD - Explore planets and discover the fauna, flora, and resources needed to craft everything from medicine and food to equipment and weapons. Build outposts and hire a crew to passively extract materials and establish cargo links to transfer resources between them. Invest these raw materials into research projects to unlock unique crafting recipes.
- LOCK AND LOAD - Space can be a dangerous place. A refined combat system gives you the tools to deal with any situation. Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle. Zero G environments add a chaotic spectacle to combat, while boost packs give players freedom to maneuver like never before.
Is the new DLC a critical comeback?
The early review snapshot for Terran Armada is too small to support a broad verdict. When checked in October 2026, Metacritic displayed two critic reviews—one positive and one mixed—and seven user ratings, with a user score of 6.0. Those are dynamic totals from a limited sample, not evidence of a settled critical consensus. Terran Armada’s Metacritic page shows the current review listing.
Shattered Space’s reception was also uneven: its review page includes critics who valued its setting while criticizing aspects of its quests, combat, or price. That does not establish how every player will feel about either expansion, but it is a reason not to describe the DLC as an unequivocal critical turnaround. Shattered Space’s review page provides the individual review record.
Should you return, start playing, or buy an expansion?
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| More meaningful intra-system travel and new systems | Free Lanes | It is free and brings Cruise Mode, travel encounters, progression changes, and other additions. |
| New faction story, companion, and recurring combat | Terran Armada | It is a separate $9.99 expansion with a new story and Incursions. |
| A contained earlier story expansion | Shattered Space | It is a separate paid expansion released September 30, 2024; its reception was uneven. |
| Trying Starfield for the first time | Base game | The expansions are separate add-ons, not substitutes for the base game. Bethesda lists PlayStation 5 among the available platforms. |
If you left because intra-system travel felt too passive, Free Lanes directly addresses that concern and is the sensible first step. If your main reason to return is a new story or repeatable combat, decide whether Terran Armada’s specific additions justify an extra purchase. Players who expected a complete overhaul of the core game should keep their expectations narrower: the additions expand and enrich the existing experience, but are not evidence that Starfield has become a fundamentally different RPG.
What Bethesda has said about future support
Bethesda representatives have said that more updates are planned, but have not attached a firm schedule or defined their scope in the cited comments. Tim Lamb told GamesRadar, “I think there’s a future for it. We have plans.” Art director Istvan Pely said, “We intend to keep doing updates after [Free Lanes and Terran Armada].” These statements indicate intent, not a dated roadmap or a guarantee of another expansion. GamesRadar’s interview has the comments in context.
