Still Wakes the Deep makes a persuasive case for the label “modern horror classic”: it turns a failing 1970s oil rig into a claustrophobic, lived-in setting and builds fear around the people trapped there, not a stockpile of weapons. That is an argument, not a settled consensus. Polygon’s review line, reproduced on the game’s Steam page, calls it “a new horror classic.”
What is Still Wakes the Deep?
Developed by The Chinese Room and published by Secret Mode, Still Wakes the Deep is a first-person narrative horror game released on June 18, 2024. It is set in 1975 aboard the Beira D, an oil rig off Scotland. A storm and an otherworldly disaster leave the player, an offshore worker, trying to find crew members and survive as the rig floods and breaks down. (Steam; PlayStation)

The basic actions—running, climbing and swimming through dangerous spaces—fit the premise of a worker trying to make it through an industrial catastrophe. The official descriptions also emphasize facing a foe without weapons. That limitation makes vulnerability part of the game’s identity: danger is something to evade and endure, rather than solve through a conventional arsenal.
Why the setting makes the horror work
The Beira D is more than a backdrop. A rig in a storm is an enclosed workplace with hazards, machinery and routes that can become perilous as the structure fails. The setting gives the disaster a physical shape: escape means moving through a place that is itself coming apart, while searching for the people who were there with you.

- LIVE THE HORROR: An immersive disaster story aboard a stunningly realised North Sea oil rig, starring an authentic cast of Scottish actors. Experience the beauty and ferocity of the sea as it rips apart one of humanity’s strongest structures and its steadfast crew.
- ESCAPE THE RIG: No weapons. No powers. Just your wits and determination. Struggle for survival on an unstable oil rig, where one wrong step could be your last.
- FACE YOUR FEARS: Something has turned your home into a nightmare, where the familiar becomes threatening, and where a noise in the dark fills you with dread. Resist the urge to turn back. Confront the unknown.
The period setting also helps the game establish a specific visual language rather than a generic haunted location. In an Xbox Wire feature, associate art director Laura Dodds said films influenced the game’s use of “reoccurring imagery and motifs to unnerve the player.” (Xbox Wire, October 25, 2023) The recurring images and the industrial environment give the horror room to build through atmosphere and implication.
People, performance and the player’s role
The story’s focus on crew members gives the search for survival a human dimension. The player is not simply crossing a dangerous level; they are trying to locate people amid confusion and catastrophe. That narrative focus suits The Chinese Room’s first-person approach, where the player experiences events from inside the crisis rather than observing it from a distance.

- EXPERIENCE THE GREY: A thrilling story of a disaster aboard an impressively realistic looking drilling rig in the North Sea. It becomes even more authentic by the Scottish actors. The North Sea is not only beautiful, but above all cruel - experience it up close when the sea disassembles both the drilling rig and the team.
- Escape from the drilling island: you have no weapons. No special powers. Only your mind and determination. Fight for survival on an unstable rig - any misstep can be fatal.
- Face your fears: Something has turned your home into a nightmare. The once-familiar environment is now menacing and fearsome sounds penetrate from the dark. Resist the urge to reverse. Face the unknown.
Because the central verbs are movement and survival, the experience is built around exposure to danger rather than combat mastery. Whether that is compelling depends partly on what a player wants from horror: those looking for a vulnerable, story-led journey may find the approach especially effective; those expecting extensive weapon-based combat may find its priorities elsewhere.
Is Still Wakes the Deep a horror classic?
“Classic” is a judgment about lasting impact, not an official category. The game has a clear case for the term: a distinctive setting, a focused survival premise, a strong connection between place and danger, and a design that makes vulnerability central. Polygon’s phrase “a new horror classic,” quoted on Steam, is a useful endorsement, but it remains one review line rather than proof of universal agreement.

- UK PSN account may be required for any online features
Steam describes the game as a three-time BAFTA Games Award winner. That is a storefront description, and recognition alone does not settle whether a game will endure as a classic. The more convincing argument is in the game’s joined-up identity: the storm, the failing rig, the search for the crew and the absence of weapons all reinforce the same kind of fear.

Yes. Secret Mode announced a PS5 physical release alongside the digital launch, with intended retail and online distribution across major territories. The official storefronts also list the Siren’s Rest expansion as digital add-on content. Those listings do not establish a physical soundtrack, tie-in book, guide or collectible edition.
