Is Switch 2 Hard to Buy in Japan—and Could the U.S. Be Next?

Nintendo’s regional sales comments do not prove a Japan shortage or predict one in the U.S. The latest official total is worldwide through June 30, 2026—not current U.S. inventory.

There is no evidence in Nintendo’s official reporting that it failed to meet Switch 2 demand in Japan, or that U.S. buyers are next to face a shortage. Nintendo said Japanese holiday sales were stronger than expected, while sales in Europe and the U.S. were weaker than expected at that time. Those comparisons describe sales against Nintendo’s forecasts—not whether stores ran out of stock.

What Nintendo’s sales comments do—and do not—show

In its May 8, 2026 financial results briefing, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said Japan had a strong holiday season, while results elsewhere, particularly in Europe and the U.S., were weaker than expected. The company had made a similar comparison in its February briefing, saying Japanese hardware sales exceeded expectations while overseas sales were somewhat weaker.

That is evidence of a regional difference in sales relative to Nintendo’s expectations. It is not evidence that Japanese demand went unfilled. The briefings do not establish how widespread retailer stockouts or waitlists were, and they do not provide current store inventory for either Japan or the U.S. Furukawa also said Nintendo expanded production capacity after launch and held components and products to support its production plans; that is useful context, not a promise of future availability. Nintendo’s May 2026 briefing Q&A and February 2026 briefing Q&A are English translations of Japanese originals.

Why Japan’s sales were stronger

Nintendo pointed to game releases as one factor behind Japan’s stronger holiday hardware performance. In the February briefing, it cited Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Kirby Air Riders. By May, Furukawa also said Pokémon Pokopia had performed well in Japan and other regions and contributed to hardware sales. Nintendo additionally cited updates to Animal Crossing: New Horizons as supporting engagement.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

These explanations matter when comparing regions: console sales can rise with the timing and appeal of games, not only with supply. Nintendo’s comments do not isolate the effect of game releases from other factors, so they should be read as the company’s explanation rather than a quantified breakdown.

What the latest worldwide figures tell us

Nintendo’s official cumulative sales page reported 23.68 million Switch 2 hardware units and 58.17 million software units sold worldwide through June 30, 2026. Those are global, life-to-date totals; they do not show how many consoles were sold in Japan or the U.S., or how many are available in stores now. Nintendo’s cumulative hardware and software sales data is the source for the figures.

  • Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***

For context, Nintendo said Switch 2 sales reached 19.86 million through its fiscal year ended March 2026, exceeding its initial 15 million forecast and revised 19 million forecast. Furukawa said the company did not see particular concerns about the system’s adoption momentum at that time. Neither the forecast comparison nor the global cumulative total answers whether a specific U.S. retailer has stock.

How to check whether U.S. buyers are facing a shortage

To answer the question for a particular buyer, use current, location-specific retailer listings rather than extrapolating from Nintendo’s regional sales commentary. Check several retailers serving your area and note whether listings show the console as available for delivery, pickup, preorder, or unavailable. A single retailer’s listing is not enough to establish a nationwide shortage.

Any broader claim should compare the same period and the same kind of measure across both countries. For example, current retailer inventory cannot be directly compared with Nintendo’s cumulative global sales, and holiday sales relative to forecast are not the same as present-day stock. Nintendo’s investor relations calendar listed the FY2027 six-month earnings release for November 5, 2026; as of October 8, those results had not yet been released. Nintendo’s investor relations schedule is the source for that date.
