The delay affected preorder timing, not the console’s June 5 launch date: U.S. retail preorders were rescheduled from April 9 to April 24, and Nintendo kept the announced launch prices for the console and Mario Kart World bundle. The U.S. console MSRP has since changed; Nintendo’s $499.99 price took effect September 1, 2026.
Why did Nintendo delay Switch 2 preorders?
Nintendo said it wanted to assess “the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions” before opening U.S. preorders. The company’s statement, quoted by The Washington Post on April 4, 2025, said it would share an updated preorder date later. Nintendo did not say tariffs were the only factor or specify a tariff cost for each console.

The announcement concerned the United States. Nintendo had initially scheduled U.S. preorders for April 9 after announcing the system on April 2; it then moved U.S. retail preorders to April 24. The console’s June 5, 2025 launch date remained in place.
What changed—and what stayed the same?
Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 preorder update separated the console and bundle from accessories. The two system prices announced for launch were unchanged at that point, while Nintendo said accessory prices would be adjusted in response to changes in market conditions.

What Nintendo later said about tariffs
In its May 9, 2025 financial-results briefing, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa explained how the company incorporated tariffs into its fiscal-year outlook. Nintendo’s consolidated forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2026 assumed U.S. tariff rates effective April 10, 2025 would remain in effect through that fiscal year. Nintendo assumed packaged software was exempt under the tariff announcement then in effect and factored a negative impact of several tens of billions of yen into its consolidated profit forecast.

- The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system

- Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
- Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***
That figure was a forecast across Nintendo’s business, not an estimate of the tariff cost of an individual Switch 2. Furukawa said Nintendo generally recognizes tariffs as a cost and incorporates them into prices, while noting that market conditions would matter if tariff assumptions changed. His stated policy was: “Our basic policy is that for any country or region, if tariffs are imposed, we recognize them as a part of the cost and incorporate them into the price.”

The $449.99 U.S. console price belongs to the 2025 launch announcement, not current purchasing context. Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 investor materials set a revised U.S. Switch 2 MSRP of $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. Retailer prices and bundle offers can differ; check the seller’s current listing and confirm whether it is for the console alone or a bundle.

For context, Nintendo announced a ¥49,980 launch price, including tax, for a Japan-only Japanese-language model in April 2025. That is a dated launch figure for a region-specific model, not a current Japanese price or a direct comparison with the U.S. price.
Quick Recap
What the preorder delay did not mean
- It was not a cancellation of Switch 2 preorders; Nintendo subsequently set April 24, 2025 as the U.S. retail preorder date.
- It was not a delay to the June 5, 2025 console launch.
- Nintendo did not immediately raise the console or Mario Kart World bundle launch price when it announced the preorder change. Accessories were treated separately and had price adjustments.
- The companywide tariff forecast does not establish a per-console tariff cost or prove that tariffs alone caused the postponement.
