It is a remaster of the original game—not a bundle with its sequel—and the console versions are listed at 30 FPS. One important buying caveat: Nintendo currently marks the Switch version unsupported on Switch 2 because of progression problems. “Definitive Edition” is not the official name of this release.
What kind of game is Tales of Symphonia?
Bandai Namco describes Tales of Symphonia as an action RPG following Lloyd Irving and his companions as they try to save two linked worlds. It combines cel-shaded character designs and anime cutscenes with real-time battles. The publisher identifies it as the fifth mainline Tales game; it first launched on Nintendo GameCube in Japan in 2003 and worldwide in 2004.
For a beginner, the main distinction is that combat happens in real time rather than through a purely menu-driven, turn-based system. The publisher also lists local co-op for up to four players total, so friends can join in person.
What does the remaster include?
The console release is an enhanced version of the original Tales of Symphonia, with visual improvements and quality-of-life changes. Bandai Namco cites improved controls for the Elemental Cargo ship, the ability to skip some events and cutscenes, and additional information on the save screen. These are refinements to the existing game; the publisher does not describe new story content exclusive to the remaster.

Which platform should a beginner choose?
The console remaster is available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Bandai Namco says the PlayStation 4 version is compatible with PlayStation 5, and the Xbox One version with Xbox Series X|S. The Switch version can be played in handheld or TV mode. The publisher says the PC Steam release already contains all the in-game content found in the remaster; it describes the console release as based on the Steam version.
| Version or mode | Publisher-listed specification | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch, TV mode | 1920×1080; 30 FPS | Supports TV play. Nintendo of Canada currently marks it unsupported on Switch 2 because of progression problems. |
| Nintendo Switch, handheld mode | 1280×720; 30 FPS | Portable play is available on the original Switch platform. |
| PlayStation 4 / PlayStation 4 Pro | 1920×1080; 30 FPS | Bandai Namco says the PS4 release is compatible with PS5. |
| Xbox One / Xbox One X | 1920×1080; 30 FPS | Bandai Namco says the Xbox One release is compatible with Xbox Series X|S. |
These frame-rate and resolution figures are Bandai Namco specifications, not independent performance-test results. In its Q&A, the publisher listed 11 GB of storage for the console releases. Nintendo of Canada’s current Switch store page lists a 10.4 GB file size; the two figures may reflect different measures or versions, so check the relevant store listing for the platform you intend to use.

Check the Switch 2 warning before buying
Nintendo of Canada currently labels the Switch version “Unsupported” on Switch 2, citing problems with game progression. That is a current storefront compatibility notice, not a confirmation that the game cannot run in every circumstance. Bandai Namco Europe published Switch version 1.31 notes on 18 October 2023, announcing an update planned for 19 October to fix an issue interfering with progression. That dated patch note does not establish that the current Switch 2 warning is resolved or refers to the same issue. Check Nintendo’s listing again before purchase, since compatibility information can change.
Is it a good fit for a beginner?
It is a plausible choice if you want a classic, story-led JRPG presented as an action RPG, enjoy real-time battles, or want local co-op. The original game’s age is worth bearing in mind: the remaster adds visual and convenience improvements, but it remains a re-release rather than a newly built modern entry. The publisher’s 30 FPS console specification may also matter if high-frame-rate presentation is a priority.
Rank #4
- Consider it if: you want the original story, cel-shaded anime presentation, real-time combat, optional local co-op, or a choice of Japanese and English voice acting.
- Look elsewhere or compare carefully if: you want the sequel included, expect a high-frame-rate console release, or need confirmed Switch 2 support.
Those are fit considerations based on the published features and specifications, not a claim about personal playtesting or a measured beginner difficulty rating.
