If your Contexto guesses aren’t getting closer, you may be following the wrong kind of clue. In the rules documented by Contexto.us.com, rank tracks meaning-based similarity—not spelling. A promising rank is a sign to explore that word’s semantic neighborhood; a colder guess is a cue to try another conceptual branch. Those mechanics are documented for Contexto.us.com, an independent game, and should not be assumed to describe contexto.me.

What does a Contexto rank tell you?

On Contexto.us.com, the answer is rank 1, and lower ranks mean closer semantic similarity. The rank is an ordering, not a letter, spelling, or distance clue. Its FAQ describes a vocabulary of 70,000 words; that figure applies to Contexto.us.com, not necessarily to contexto.me. Read the Contexto.us.com FAQ.

The independent site’s rules say the ranking is about meaning rather than lookalike spelling. So if a guess is warm, changing a few letters may not help: test what the word means, what it belongs with, and how it is used. Contexto.us.com’s How to Play page explains its rules.

What to try when a guess is warm

Use a relatively favorable rank as a direction, not as proof you have found the right category. These are practical suggestions inferred from the site’s stated meaning-based mechanic, not a tested guarantee:

  • Try the broader category. If your guess is an object, test other objects in the same class or a more general category word.
  • Try its function. Consider what the thing does, what people do with it, or what it helps produce.
  • Try its setting. Guess places, situations, or activities where it commonly appears.
  • Try associated words. Think of people, materials, events, or ideas often mentioned alongside it.

After each guess, compare the rank movement. If the new word is warmer, keep exploring that branch; if it is substantially colder, pivot to a different relationship instead of making more minor spelling variations. Treat this as a way to organize guesses, not an official scoring rubric.

Why a close rank may feel wrong

Contexto.us.com says its ranking is based on a model of how words are used in ordinary text. That can put words close because they share contexts, even when they are not synonyms. Its editorial policy notes: “Similarity is not the same as relatedness. Words that are opposites frequently rank close together, because they appear in the same sentences.” The policy also warns that learned associations can be arbitrary, dated, or culturally narrow. Contexto.us.com’s Editorial Policy was last updated 2 August 2026.

That means a surprising rank is not necessarily a mistake on your part. If a word that seems unrelated—or even opposite—scores well, use it to test the surrounding context rather than insisting the answer must be a synonym.

Should you use a hint?

The Contexto.us.com FAQ says its hint reveals a word closer to the answer than your best guess, which can point you toward a new branch without immediately giving the answer. Whether contexto.me offers the same hint and how its control works are not verified here. Check the live game’s interface or its own official guidance before relying on that feature.

Which Contexto game are you playing?

Contexto.us.com explicitly describes itself as independent and unaffiliated with contexto.me. Its FAQ, rules, vocabulary figure, and hint description should therefore be treated as specific to that site. The contexto.me homepage available for review exposed only a JavaScript-required shell, so its current rank scale, accepted vocabulary, handling of word forms, and hint controls could not be confirmed. Do not transfer one site’s mechanics to the other without checking the game you have open.
