The announced Avatar: The Last Airbender action-RPG was reported to be no longer in production by June 2026. That is not the same as a formal cancellation announcement: the available report says the project was not in production when Paramount’s unified gaming studio was formed, and leaves open the possibility of an Avatar game in a different iteration.
Is the Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG still happening?
As of June 2026, the clearest public status is that the Saber Interactive and Paramount Game Studios RPG was not in production when Paramount’s newly unified games studio was created. Engadget reported the information from IGN’s interview with Shawn Kittelsen, Paramount Games Studio’s senior vice president and head of creative and production. Kittelsen reportedly said the project “was not in production” at that point, and that this “doesn’t mean you won’t get a AAA Avatar game at some point, but it might come in a different iteration.” Engadget’s June 6, 2026 report relays the interview.
That supports describing the announced RPG as no longer in production, not stating that Paramount or Saber formally announced its cancellation. Paramount’s June 2026 studio announcement names other projects, including Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, but does not list the RPG; that omission adds context but does not establish cancellation by itself. Paramount’s studio announcement concerns the new group and its lineup.
What was announced in 2024?
On October 3, 2024, Paramount Game Studios and Saber Interactive announced an AAA action-RPG in collaboration with Avatar Studios. The proposed story centered on an all-new Avatar, previously unseen in the franchise, thousands of years before the existing Avatar Legends timeline. The announcement described dynamic combat and a vibrant world, but did not establish a final title, release date, platforms, or detailed gameplay systems. GameSpot’s October 3, 2024 report covered the announcement.

Paramount executive Doug Rosen presented the game as a way to extend the franchise’s world-building and give fans an immersive way to experience new content. He also said Paramount would co-fund the title alongside Saber. Those were statements about the plan at announcement time; they do not show that the game remains in development.
Was the Avatar RPG canceled?
No formal cancellation notice from Paramount or Saber is established by the cited reporting. The most accurate distinction is:
- Reported status: The project was not in production when Paramount’s gaming divisions combined to form a unified studio.
- Not established: That either company publicly issued a definitive cancellation announcement.
- Still possible, according to Kittelsen as quoted by Engadget: An AAA Avatar game could arrive in a different iteration.
The announcement-era phrase “the biggest video game in franchise history” was promotional language, not a measured statistic. No budget, scope benchmark, or release schedule was supplied to substantiate it.
What happened to the Saber Interactive Avatar game?
The project announced in 2024 was a planned action-RPG from Saber Interactive and Paramount Game Studios, made with Avatar Studios. The 2026 status update came after the Paramount and Skydance gaming divisions were combined into a new Paramount Games Studio. The report places the RPG outside that studio’s production slate at its formation, but does not provide a detailed account of development history or explain why production had stopped.

Do not confuse that RPG with Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game. Paramount’s June 2026 announcement describes the latter as a separate 1v1 fighter spanning Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, developed by Gameplay Group International and PM Studios in collaboration with Paramount and Avatar Studios. It is not the Saber RPG. See Paramount Games’ announcement and the 2024 RPG announcement coverage for the distinction between the projects.

There is an existing tabletop option, but it is not the announced console/PC video game. Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game is a tabletop RPG set in the worlds of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra; its core rulebook had a physical release in January 2023. It offers a role-playing experience in the franchise, but it should not be mistaken for the Saber/Paramount action-RPG. The publisher’s Avatar RPG page provides information about the tabletop game.
