In its coverage of an interview with Game Informer, GameSpot attributed the comparison to Far Cry 4 creative director Alex Hutchinson. He said, “With Far Cry 4, we felt that the map size for [Far Cry 3] was really good”; GameSpot summarized the comparison as Far Cry 4 having “pretty much the same” square footage as Far Cry 3. That is a qualitative comparison, not a precise measurement. The available sources do not provide comparable official figures for playable land area or specify how boundaries, water, restricted areas, or accessible terrain were counted. So there is no sourced basis here for saying Far Cry 3 is larger—or for assigning either game an exact area.

Those differences can affect how large each world feels: Kyrat’s vertical terrain and added traversal options create a different kind of journey from Far Cry 3’s island setting. That is an interpretation of the environments and movement options, not a measured comparison of map area. Climbing or flying across a landscape does not establish that it covers more ground.
