The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) is a 16-bit console. Nintendo lists its CPU and graphics processor as 16-bit; its separate sound chip is 8-bit.
Why the SNES is classified as 16-bit
Nintendo’s hardware history places the Super Famicom in the 16-bit market. Its technical specifications also identify the main processing components this way:
- CPU: 16-bit 65816 processor.
- Graphics processor: 16-bit.
- Sound chip: 8-bit Sony SPC700.
These are Nintendo’s published component labels; the specifications page does not set out every possible technical definition of “bit width.”
Why does the SNES have an 8-bit sound chip?
A console contains multiple components, and they need not share the same bit-width label. Nintendo calls the SPC700 sound chip 8-bit while identifying the CPU and graphics processor as 16-bit. The sound chip’s specification describes that component, not the classification of the entire console.
