Yes—as a playful introduction to basic programming ideas, not as a course that teaches standard Python. You program a drone to automate farm work and unlock technology, while the game gradually introduces concepts in its own Python-like language. Its Steam description also warns that solving tasks independently can be challenging if you have never programmed.
What you do in the game
The core loop is to write code that directs a drone to handle farm tasks, collect resources, and use those resources to unlock technology. The official Steam listing says the beginning introduces basic programming concepts one at a time. Progression is continuous rather than organized into a conventional course of separate lessons.
That makes the game a way to encounter coding ideas through a concrete goal: automate work and see what your program does. You will need to experiment and reason through tasks, rather than simply follow a guided lesson to a predetermined answer.
Does it teach Python?
It uses a language similar to Python, but the Steam listing explicitly says it is not exactly Python. Code is saved in .py files, and you can optionally edit it in an external editor such as VS Code; with the File Watcher setting enabled, the game detects external edits. The file extension and resemblance do not mean that game code is fully compatible with standard Python or its libraries.

- BUILDS SPATIAL INSIGHT & PLANNING — Smart Farmer develops five STEM-connected cognitive skills with every challenge: spatial insight, planning, problem solving, concentration and flexible thinking. Dividing a field with just three fences so each animal type gets its own meadow trains the brain to see space, plan ahead and adapt when the first idea doesn't work — the same reasoning that underpins mathematics, engineering and logical thinking. It's so much fun to play, kids forget they're building real skills.
- DESIGNED FOR AGES 4 TO ADULT — 60 CHALLENGES THAT GROW WITH YOU — Four difficulty levels — Starter, Junior, Expert and Master — take players from a simple first fence puzzle to layouts that genuinely test older children and adults. Early challenges are a perfect introduction to spatial reasoning for a 4-year-old; later challenges add a water trough to every meadow, raising the difficulty. One farm the whole family solves together, each at their own level.
- FENCE OFF THE FIELD — GIVE EVERY ANIMAL ITS OWN MEADOW — Trouble at the farm! The horses, cows, sheep and pigs are all mixed up and need to be separated. Place the animals as shown on your challenge card, then use just three fences — alongside the fences already fixed to the board — to divide the field so each type of animal gets its own closed-off meadow. In tougher challenges, every meadow must also contain a water trough. One solution every time — can you help the farmer sort it out?
- BRAIN HEALTH FOR EVERY GENERATION — The same farmyard puzzle that builds a child's first spatial-reasoning skills gives adults a satisfying daily brain challenge and offers older adults the kind of engaging mental workout that helps keep the mind sharp and active. Screen-free, endlessly re-playable across 60 challenges, and full of chunky, tactile animals kids love to hold — Smart Farmer is a thoughtful gift for a curious child, a puzzle-loving adult, or a grandparent who enjoys a genuine challenge. Farmyard fun the whole family grows into.
- AWARD-WINNING BELGIAN DESIGN — SmartGames is the worldwide leader in multi-level logic games, recognised with over 70 awards worldwide and trusted by families, educators and puzzle lovers in 80+ countries. Smart Farmer is built to the same standard: a sturdy board, beautifully detailed 3D animals, and a single elegant solution per challenge. Includes a free companion app with animated hints for when the meadows just won't divide.
Consider it an introduction to some programming habits and concepts—not a substitute for learning Python syntax, libraries, and the wider language in a standard Python environment. If your goal is to write Python outside the game, use a current beginner resource alongside it.
How difficult is it for a first-time programmer?
The official description sets two expectations at once: concepts are introduced gradually, but the game will not hold your hand through every solution. It specifically cautions that working out the tasks can be challenging for people who have never programmed. A beginner should expect trial, error, and problem-solving, especially as the challenges become more demanding.

Player comments offer mixed personal impressions, not measured evidence of learning. In a Reddit discussion, a commenter identifying as a senior Python developer describes it as a good introduction to basic programming ideas while noting its differences from Python; a beginner says they enjoy it but find later logic demanding. Those experiences can help set expectations, but they cannot establish how effectively the game teaches.
How to get more from it as a beginner
- Work through the early concepts at your own pace instead of expecting a formal lesson plan.
- Run your code, observe what the drone does, and change one thing at a time when a solution fails.
- When using external editing, enable the game’s File Watcher setting so it can detect changes.
- Check that a guide matches the current game version. An official January 21, 2025 announcement documented breaking changes, including explicit imports and renamed functions and items; older examples may no longer apply.
- For standard Python instruction, pair the game with a current beginner resource or Python book rather than assuming game code will transfer directly.
Who is it a good fit for?
- Try it if: you want a game-based way to explore basic programming concepts, enjoy solving puzzles, and are comfortable figuring out solutions through experimentation.
- Use another resource as well if: your main goal is to learn standard Python, including its libraries and conventions, or you want a structured curriculum with explicit explanations and exercises.
- Look elsewhere if: you need a highly guided first coding experience and would find open-ended problem-solving frustrating.
