The Last of Us Part I is a single-player remake, while the older Factions mode is described as multiplayer—not as local split-screen play. PlayStation’s official FAQ does not explicitly use the words “split-screen,” so this answer follows from the modes the official descriptions identify.

Why multiplayer does not mean split-screen
“Multiplayer” can refer to online play, local play, or both. The Factions announcement establishes a multiplayer mode, but its description does not say that two players can share one console and screen. It is therefore not sound to treat Factions as split-screen or local co-op based on that description alone.

Can you play the story in co-op?
The official description of The Last of Us Part I identifies it as a remake of the original single-player story and says it does not feature Factions. The official sources cited here do not document a co-op story mode for that edition.
If you want the remake, PlayStation’s Part I product and FAQ page describes the single-player game. It does not include Factions.
