For now, yes: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is the last released game in the crossover series. Former executive producer Lee Cocker said in 2024 that the series ended after Tokyo, following the International Olympic Committee’s decision not to renew the previous arrangement with Nintendo and SEGA. That is Cocker’s account, not a formal cancellation announcement from the IOC or either game publisher.
What happened to the Mario & Sonic games?
The series began in 2007 with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, a Beijing Games tie-in. Nintendo and SEGA went on to release crossover editions associated with Summer and Winter Olympics, pairing characters from both franchises in Olympic events and fictional “dream events.” Christopher Paul’s scholarly overview, hosted by the LA84 Foundation, says the first four games had sold more than 29 million copies; that figure does not cover the entire six-game series. Read the LA84 Foundation article.
The final installment was Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 for Nintendo Switch. No corresponding game was released for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Nintendo Life reported Cocker’s explanation in 2024: the IOC did not renew the earlier licensing arrangement with Nintendo and SEGA and wanted to explore other partners, NFTs, and esports. That explanation is attributed to Cocker, a former franchise executive producer, rather than to an official IOC statement. Nintendo Life’s report on Cocker’s comments.
Does “dead” mean officially cancelled?
Not in the sense of a public formal cancellation notice. Cocker described Tokyo as the end of the franchise, and no later Mario & Sonic Olympic game has been announced in the cited coverage. But there is no verified public statement from Nintendo or the IOC declaring the series permanently cancelled. The most accurate description is that the series has ended in practice, with no announced return.

Does the new Sonic–Olympics deal bring the crossover back?
No game revival was announced. On October 7, 2025, SEGA and the IOC announced a new multi-year licensing agreement bringing Sonic and Olympic branding together, with partners sought for a merchandise collection planned for 2026. The announcement concerns Sonic-branded Olympic licensing and merchandise; it does not mention Mario, a new game, or a return of the crossover series. SEGA’s announcement.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is the one to look for if you want to revisit the series. Availability depends on region and format: in a 2026 report, Nintendo Life said the digital version was no longer available in North America, Japan, and Australia, while it remained listed in the UK and Europe at the time of publication. The report also said physical copies were still on sale.
