The NEOGEO AES+ is making one of the strongest hardware-focused claims of any modern retro-console revival: SNK and PLAION REPLAI say it uses re-engineered ASIC chips rather than software emulation, and that it supports original AES cartridges. Those features make it a promising remake, but they do not yet prove it is the most authentic. Independent comparisons with original hardware are still needed to assess timing, sound and game behavior.
What is the NEOGEO AES+?
The AES+ is a planned revival of SNK’s home NEOGEO AES, developed by SNK and PLAION REPLAI. PLAION REPLAI describes it as a hardware-faithful reimplementation, with modern connections and features alongside support for the original console’s cartridge format.

The key distinction in its pitch is the hardware approach. PLAION REPLAI says gameplay is not achieved through emulation: the console uses legacy ASIC chips re-engineered by modern standards. That is a manufacturer claim about the design, not an independent demonstration that every game behaves exactly as it does on an original AES.
What makes it seem authentic?
Re-engineered ASICs instead of software emulation
The advertised use of re-engineered ASIC chips is the AES+’s clearest point of difference. It suggests an effort to reproduce the original machine’s hardware behavior rather than run its games through ordinary software emulation. But the label alone cannot establish accuracy: the important test is whether the finished console matches original AES hardware in timing, audio and game behavior.

Support for original AES cartridges
PLAION REPLAI says the AES+ works with both new NEOGEO AES cartridges and original AES cartridges. Specialist reporting from Time Extension distinguishes those from MVS arcade cartridges, which are not compatible. “AES” and “MVS” refer to different cartridge formats; support for one should not be mistaken for support for the other.
Modern displays and CRTs
The announced connections aim to serve both modern setups and older televisions: low-latency HDMI output is listed for contemporary displays, while original AV output is retained for CRTs. The console also has DIP switches for language selection, overclocking and display modes. These are advertised features; independent testing will be needed to establish actual latency and how the display settings affect play.

What is included, and what is optional?
PLAION REPLAI lists the console, a wired arcade stick, an HDMI cable and a power supply in the package. A memory card is required for permanent high-score saving, so that feature depends on an accessory rather than being available from the console alone.

The guide says the new cartridges are also compatible with original AES systems. Availability and package details can change, so check the official product page and retailer listings for current information.
What remains unproven?
“Authentic” is not a single hardware specification. A convincing comparison needs to look beyond the chip design and ask whether the console reproduces how an original AES plays. GamesRadar+ noted in its April 2026 coverage that its editor was waiting to test the AES+ against original hardware for timing, performance and audio accuracy. No independent results establishing an overall fidelity winner are available in the cited coverage.

- Media compatibility: Do original AES cartridges work reliably? The announced support does not extend to MVS cartridges.
- Practical setup: How well do the HDMI and original AV options serve modern TVs and CRTs?
- Value and availability: What does the complete setup cost, including any separately sold accessories and games?
Developer Furrtek offered a measured view in comments reported by Time Extension in April 2026: “Perfect, maybe not, but certainly with the ambition to do better than emulation, to honour the brand, and to respect the fans.” That describes an ambition, not a test result for the finished console.

PLAION REPLAI’s official EU product page currently lists preorder shipping from 16 September 2027. Earlier April 2026 reports described a November 2026 launch, so that older timing should not be treated as current. The official page does not state a current price; launch prices quoted in those older reports are not verified current checkout prices.
So, is it the most authentic retro console remake yet?
It is a credible contender on the evidence available: its advertised ASIC-based approach, original AES cartridge support and choice of HDMI or original AV output make it more than a simple plug-and-play collection of games. But “most authentic” remains unproven. Until independent testing compares final hardware with an original AES for timing, sound and game behavior, the fairest verdict is that the AES+ is designed with authenticity as a priority—not that it has already won the title.
