Yes. Nintendo says the New Nintendo 3DS family has enhanced processing power, with faster application loading and enough additional capability to support games made exclusively for the newer hardware. But Nintendo’s cited material does not give a benchmark or percentage speed increase, and it does not establish that every existing 3DS game runs faster.
What “more powerful” means on the New 3DS
Nintendo’s New Nintendo 3DS XL product page describes “Enhanced processing power” and says it enables faster loading of applications such as Miiverse. The same page mentions faster downloads, but notes that download speeds may vary with the internet connection; that claim is not a measure of game performance. Nintendo UK’s New Nintendo 3DS XL page does not provide a CPU or GPU benchmark, frame-rate comparison, or quantified speedup.

Nintendo’s history offers a practical example of what the extra capability enabled: its 2015 account says Xenoblade Chronicles 3D came to New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL “thanks to the enhanced processing power” of those systems. This supports the claim that the New hardware can do more; it does not show that a particular older game has a higher frame rate on it.
Which games work only on New 3DS?
Most of the Nintendo 3DS library is not exclusive to New models. The distinction is a limited New-family-only category: Nintendo Support says software designed exclusively for New Nintendo 3DS family systems cannot be used on the original Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, or Nintendo 2DS. Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is one example. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance explains that restriction.

So an original 3DS can play ordinary 3DS games, but it cannot play every title released for the family. Check a game’s packaging or product listing for New Nintendo 3DS compatibility before buying if you have original hardware.

Nintendo describes these additions on its New Nintendo 3DS XL product page and New Nintendo 2DS XL page. The C Stick, extra shoulder buttons, and improved 3D are feature differences, not evidence of a specific processor speed or game frame-rate gain.

Does the original 3DS XL have better performance than the original 3DS?
The original Nintendo 3DS XL is a larger-screen version of the original 3DS, not a New-family performance upgrade. Nintendo of Europe’s 2014 comparison sheet lists upper and lower screens of 3.53 and 3.02 inches for the original 3DS, versus 4.88 and 4.18 inches for the original 3DS XL. It also gives approximate battery life for Nintendo 3DS games as 3–5 hours on the original 3DS and 3.5–6.5 hours on the original 3DS XL; for Nintendo DS games, the estimates are 5–8 and 6–10 hours, respectively. Those are original-model figures from the 2014 sheet, not New 3DS test results or guarantees for a used console with an aged battery. Nintendo of Europe’s comparison sheet predates New 3DS.

Nintendo says the 3DS family is no longer manufactured, so buyers are generally choosing among used consoles or remaining stock rather than new production. For a used New Nintendo 3DS XL, weigh the New-only games and added controls against the condition of the system, screen, buttons, hinge, battery, and any included charger. A New Nintendo 2DS XL is another way to play New-family games if 3D viewing is not important. Confirm the charger model and regional game compatibility in the listing rather than assuming accessories are included.
