Yes—for some players, the standard PS5 DualSense can be an excellent fighting-game controller, but there’s no evidence that it is objectively “top-tier” for everyone. The deciding factor is whether its directional controls feel reliable and comfortable to you. Community reports include both players who use it for Street Fighter 6 and players who dislike its D-pad; they are anecdotes, not a measured comparison or verified tournament-adoption record. If you already own one, it is a reasonable pad to try before buying something else.
What makes a controller work for fighting games?
A controller’s reputation matters less than whether you can perform your game’s inputs consistently. For a pad player, that often comes down to directional comfort: whether you can move, jump, block and enter diagonals without unwanted inputs. There is no controlled D-pad accuracy test in the available evidence that establishes the DualSense as universally good or bad.
Also consider the game’s button layout. A conventional pad may suit the game’s default controls, while players who want six face buttons within reach may prefer a dedicated fightpad layout. Before choosing, compare the features that affect your own play:
- Directional input: Do you prefer the D-pad or analog stick, and does the controller register the directions you intend?
- Button layout: Are the number and placement of face buttons comfortable for your game and preferred control scheme?
- Customization: Do you need button remapping, saved profiles or stick-response adjustments?
- Compatibility: Does the controller work with your platform and the specific game you play?
- Repair and other uses: Are replaceable parts important, and do you want one controller for other genres as well?
There is no established head-to-head measurement here for directional errors, input latency or competitive results. Treat “top-tier” as a personal fit judgment, not a proven ranking.

When the standard DualSense is a good choice
The standard DualSense is a sensible option if you already have one, like its shape and can reliably execute your game’s directional inputs on it. Community discussion about Street Fighter 6 includes players who report using the controller, alongside players who dislike its D-pad. Such reports show that preferences differ; they do not verify claims about tournament winners or show that one pad improves a player’s results.
Try your own game and usual inputs before spending money. If the D-pad feels comfortable and your directional commands register as intended, a community ranking—or someone else’s dislike of the pad—is not a reason you must replace it. If it does not suit your hands, a different controller layout may be a better fit.

What the DualSense Edge adds—and what it does not
The DualSense Edge is an upgrade for players who want more configuration options, not a documented D-pad redesign. Sony’s official customization guide describes adjustable button assignments, stick sensitivity and dead zones, trigger settings, saved profiles and replaceable stick modules. The modules are sold separately; check current availability and confirm the exact model before purchasing.
Sony says the Edge can store up to four profiles, including the default. Its “Digital” stick response curve registers nearly maximum input after slight stick movement. Sony describes it as providing “instant input reaction” for fighting and action games. That is a description of a configurable stick curve—not an independent latency test, proof of competitive advantage or change to the D-pad. It may be useful if you play with the stick and prefer that response.

The Edge makes most sense when you will use its remapping, profiles, stick tuning or replaceable modules. If your main issue is that you dislike the DualSense D-pad, the documented Edge features do not establish that buying the Edge will fix it.
When a six-button fightpad may fit better
If you want six face buttons for your fighting-game layout, the Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded is a concrete alternative to consider. TechRadar’s review reports that it includes a swappable six-button Fightpad module and tests the controller with Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8. The publication presents it as an option for players who do not have room for a traditional fight stick.

That review is one publication’s evaluation, not a controlled comparison against the standard DualSense. Choose this kind of layout because it suits your hands and game—not because the available evidence proves it produces better results.

Sony says the DualSense can connect to supported devices through USB-C and work with games that support generic controllers. Its support guide cautions that Steam controller support varies by game and directs players to check each game’s controller-support information.

That makes compatibility a game-by-game question. Do not assume every PC fighting game will show the same button prompts, support the same mappings, or expose the same wireless and advanced controller features. Check the game’s support information and test the configuration you intend to use.

How to decide without overthinking the ranking
- Start with the game and platform you actually use. Confirm that the game supports the controller, especially on PC.
