Yes. AI Dungeon is free to play, and its current free plan is called Wanderer. It provides basic game access without a subscription; paid memberships add more AI models, context, Memories, and Credits. The AI Dungeon Help Center confirms the game is free to play, and its membership page lists Wanderer as Free.
What the free Wanderer plan includes
The current membership page lists Wanderer at Free, with 0 Credits, 25 Memories, and up to 4k tokens of context. Context is the story text and related information the AI can consider when generating its next action. A smaller context window can mean less of a long-running adventure is available to the model at once; it does not mean you cannot play a long adventure.

Is the free version enough?
- Starting out or playing casually: Wanderer is a way to begin without paying for a membership.
- Playing stories with extensive history or reference material: More context may help the AI consider more prior story information when it responds.
- Wanting more model choices or image generation: Compare paid membership benefits and Credit use before deciding whether those features are worth the cost.
Can you play on a phone or offline?
AI Dungeon is available on the web and through mobile apps. Its Getting Started guide says play depends on AI Dungeon’s servers, so it is not an offline game. The guide does not identify a physical accessory or purchase as necessary to access a free account.

Check trial terms before subscribing
AI Dungeon’s official membership page says Journey and Legend include a one-week trial, while its separate premium-trial FAQ names Champion and Legend. Champion is a legacy tier label in AI Dungeon documentation. Because these official pages do not agree, do not assume a particular current plan includes a trial; confirm the terms shown at checkout.

AI Dungeon’s Steam and Traveler FAQ says the Steam app was retired in early 2024 and that the former Traveler tier’s benefits were later given to free players. Advice to buy the old Steam Traveler tier to get current free-tier features is outdated.
