The game that best matches the “forgotten monkey survival sim” description is The Survivalists, Team17’s island survival sandbox. Microsoft’s Xbox Store already lists it for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, but the available official listings do not state that an Xbox One purchase will convert to a Series X|S entitlement, identify a December date, or describe an upgrade policy.
The game behind the December-upgrade claim
The Survivalists is an adventure-focused survival sandbox set around island exploration. Its core loop combines scavenging, building, crafting and training monkeys to help with survival tasks. That combination makes it the most plausible match for descriptions of a monkey-centered survival game, but it is important not to turn that identification into confirmation of the upgrade rumor.

Xbox Store listings identify The Survivalists as playable on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. A platform listing is evidence that the game can be obtained or played on Series X|S; it is not, by itself, evidence of a newly scheduled next-generation version or a free entitlement for existing owners.
What Microsoft’s listings establish
- Supported platforms: Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S are listed for the game.
- Gameplay: The description emphasizes island exploration, construction, crafting and monkey training as parts of the survival experience.
- Available editions: Microsoft lists a Deluxe Edition and a Complete Edition.
The listings do not provide a December upgrade announcement, a release day, a Smart Delivery or entitlement statement, or an eligibility rule for people who own the Xbox One version. They also do not establish a performance mode, resolution target or other Series X|S-specific enhancement.

How the editions differ
| Edition | Included content | Platform listing |
|---|---|---|
| Deluxe Edition | Base game and Monkey Business Pack | Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S |
| Complete Edition | Base game, Monkey Business Pack and Frostbite Fortress expansion | Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S |
The Complete Edition is the only edition in the available evidence that explicitly bundles the Frostbite Fortress expansion. Neither listing supplies a separate December-upgrade entitlement rule.
What remains unverified about December
As of October 16, 2026, the available official information does not confirm any of the details readers would need before treating the claim as real:

- A December release or upgrade date
- Whether the upgrade is free for existing Xbox One owners
- Whether eligibility depends on a particular edition, purchase date or storefront
- Whether the Series X|S listing represents a new build, backward compatibility or another delivery method
- Any promised graphics, frame-rate or loading-time improvements
Until Team17 or Xbox publishes a direct announcement covering those points, “free Xbox Series X|S upgrade this December” should be treated as an unverified premise rather than a confirmed feature.
Can you play it on Xbox Series X|S now?
The answer supported by the store listings is yes: The Survivalists is listed for Xbox Series X|S as well as Xbox One. That tells you the title has a Series X|S-compatible store listing, but it does not answer whether an Xbox One owner automatically receives the Series X|S version at no extra cost. Check the product page attached to your account and any entitlement language shown at purchase; do not assume that platform support equals a free upgrade.

The recent trial offer—and why it is not a December promotion
Xbox Wire reported a Free Play Days window for The Survivalists from September 3 through September 6, 2026. Access was offered to eligible members of the Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential plans during that dated event. The window has ended, so it should not be presented as a current way to play or as proof of a December upgrade.
Free Play Days and an owner upgrade are separate mechanisms: the former is a temporary trial tied to specified dates and memberships, while the latter would require an explicit entitlement policy. The September event supplies no evidence for the latter.

What to check if an upgrade is announced
- Look for a first-party announcement. Confirm that the notice comes from Team17 or Xbox and includes a date, supported editions and the exact owner entitlement.
- Read the edition wording. Determine whether the free offer covers the standard game, Deluxe Edition, Complete Edition or only new purchases.
- Check your Xbox library. After any announcement, compare the product page and install options while signed into the account that owns the game.
- Verify regional terms. Upgrade availability, store pricing and promotional conditions can vary by region and format.
- Do not infer performance features. Wait for official specifications before expecting higher frame rates, resolution changes or faster loading.
Bottom line for prospective players
The Survivalists is the likely game named by the headline, and Xbox officially lists it for both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The Complete Edition adds Monkey Business Pack and Frostbite Fortress, while a September 3–6, 2026 Free Play Days event offered a temporary trial to eligible Game Pass members. None of those facts confirms a free Series X|S upgrade in December. Treat the upgrade as unconfirmed until Team17 or Xbox publishes the date and entitlement terms.
