The so-called Xbox handheld is actually Asus’s ROG Xbox Ally family: two Windows 11 gaming PCs developed with Microsoft. Asus supplies the hardware and ROG engineering; Microsoft adds the Xbox-focused software experience and integration.
The standard ROG Xbox Ally is a redesigned, more Xbox-oriented successor to the 2023 ROG Ally. The ROG Xbox Ally X is the genuinely higher-performance model. Neither is a traditional Xbox console, and neither can locally play the entire Xbox Series X|S library.

What is the “Xbox handheld”?
“Xbox handheld” is informal shorthand, not the official product name. Microsoft and Asus sell two devices: the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X.

That makes them flexible handheld PCs rather than closed Xbox consoles. The Xbox branding refers primarily to the software layer, controls and ecosystem integration—not to Xbox console hardware inside the device.
Microsoft announced the partnership on June 8, 2025, and both models launched on October 16, 2025. In the United States, Asus listed the ROG Xbox Ally at $599.99 and the ROG Xbox Ally X at $999.99 in the August 16, 2026 price snapshot. Prices and stock can change.
Microsoft’s announcement and Asus’s announcement describe the products as a collaboration, not as a Microsoft-manufactured console.
How different are the two new models?

The specifications come from the original ROG Ally specifications, the ROG Xbox Ally product page and the ROG Xbox Ally X product page.
The new chassis has contoured grips inspired by Xbox Wireless Controllers, revised controls and dedicated Xbox-related buttons. Both models retain a 7-inch 1080p/120Hz LCD, so this is not an OLED display upgrade.

Is the standard ROG Xbox Ally more powerful than the original Ally?
Not in a way that justifies an unconditional “yes.” Asus claims up to a 20% performance increase over the original ROG Ally in Forza Horizon 5 and Gears of War: Reloaded, tested at 720p with a 60fps limit and default settings.
That is a manufacturer result from selected games and settings—not a universal benchmark. Performance varies with the game engine, drivers, firmware, resolution, graphics settings, power mode and whether the handheld is plugged in.

The standard Xbox Ally’s clearest hardware advantages are its 60Wh battery, redesigned ergonomics and newer platform. Its Ryzen Z2 A is efficiency-focused and is not simply a higher-tier replacement for the original Ally’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme. In some GPU-limited games, the older Z1 Extreme can remain competitive.
So, compared with the 2023 ROG Ally, the standard model is best understood as a more efficient and Xbox-focused evolution with a claimed performance improvement in certain conditions—not a guaranteed 20% faster machine in every game.
Is the ROG Xbox Ally X genuinely more powerful?
The ROG Xbox Ally X has the stronger case. It uses AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB of faster memory, 1TB of storage and an 80Wh battery. Asus claims up to a 30% performance increase over the 2024 ROG Ally X in selected tests involving Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Ages.

Those figures should still be treated as Asus’s limited test claims rather than a guarantee for every game. The larger memory pool and higher potential power budget can matter in demanding titles, but higher performance modes can also mean more heat, fan noise and battery drain.

The important comparison is with the correct predecessor. The 2024 ROG Ally X already had 24GB of memory and an 80Wh battery. The Xbox Ally X is therefore not a major battery or memory upgrade for existing owners; its main changes are the newer processor platform, revised chassis and Microsoft’s Xbox software experience.
What did Microsoft actually add?
Microsoft’s contribution is most visible when the device starts. The handheld is designed to boot into an Xbox-inspired full-screen experience rather than making the user begin with a conventional Windows desktop.
- Xbox, View and Menu controls are integrated into the handheld layout.
- A Command Center and library experience provide faster access to games and settings.
- Installed games from multiple sources can be brought together in a more console-like interface.
- Xbox Game Pass and Xbox PC games are integrated into the experience.
- Microsoft’s Handheld Compatibility program is intended to provide guidance about how supported games should work on the devices.
However, Windows remains underneath. Updates, launchers, account sign-ins, desktop prompts, overlays, anti-cheat systems and inconsistent controller support can still appear. The interface makes Windows handheld gaming more approachable; it does not turn Windows into a fully closed Xbox operating system.

What games can the ROG Xbox Ally play?
It can run Windows PC games that the hardware and software support, including titles from Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Battle.net and the Xbox app. Xbox Game Pass PC games can be installed when the plan and title support it.
That is different from native Xbox console compatibility. The Xbox logo does not mean every Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S game can be installed and played locally. Console games may require a compatible PC version, Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play. Cloud play depends on internet quality, regional availability and subscription eligibility.
Storage is another practical limitation. A 512GB drive can fill quickly with modern AAA games, while the X’s 1TB drive is more comfortable. Both models support storage expansion, but microSD performance and reliability depend on the card and the game workload.

Buy the ROG Xbox Ally if:
- You want your first handheld PC at about $600.
- Xbox, Game Pass and a controller-like interface are central to the purchase.
- You value a larger battery and improved grips more than maximum frame rates.
- You want access to several PC storefronts without using SteamOS.
Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X if:
- You want the fastest model in this family.
- You play demanding AAA games.
- You value 24GB memory, 1TB storage and an 80Wh battery.
- You accept a $999.99 U.S. list price before accessories and games.
- You may also use the handheld as a docked Windows PC.
Keep an older ROG Ally or look for a discount if:
- You already own the 2024 ROG Ally X and expect a transformative upgrade.
- You mainly play lightweight indie games that already run well.
- You dislike Windows troubleshooting.
- You expect modern AAA games to run at 1080p and 120fps.
- You primarily want OLED image quality.
The original Ally may be better value if heavily discounted, particularly for buyers who do not need the Xbox interface or larger battery. The 2024 Ally X remains especially relevant because it already combines 24GB memory with an 80Wh battery. Check current refurbished, open-box and clearance pricing rather than comparing only old launch prices.

How does it compare with Steam Deck and other handheld PCs?
There is no universal winner. The ROG Xbox Ally X is positioned above Steam Deck-class hardware for demanding games, while SteamOS generally provides a simpler, more console-like Steam experience. Windows offers broader launcher compatibility, but also more of the maintenance that comes with a PC.

Steam Deck is the more natural choice for buyers prioritizing Steam integration, simplicity and value. Lenovo’s Legion Go family is another Windows alternative for buyers who prioritize different screen sizes or hardware designs. The ROG Xbox Ally is the better fit for someone who specifically wants Xbox integration alongside broad Windows storefront support.
The Xbox Ally’s 80Wh battery is substantial, but it does not guarantee proportionally longer runtime: a more powerful processor can consume more energy. Likewise, the 120Hz panel does not mean modern AAA games will consistently reach 120fps.
Verdict
The Xbox handheld is not simply an old ROG Ally with an Xbox logo, but it is also not a standalone Microsoft Xbox console. It is Asus ROG hardware developed with Microsoft and wrapped in a more Xbox-oriented Windows experience.

The ROG Xbox Ally X is the true performance model, with a newer high-end processor, 24GB memory, 1TB storage and an 80Wh battery—but its upgrade value is much less obvious for owners of the 2024 ROG Ally X.
