If your feet are at Y=64 while you stand on a full-height block, that supporting block is ordinarily at Y=63. The difference is between the player’s position and the block’s grid position.
What your Y coordinate measures
Y is the vertical axis: positive values go up and negative values go down. Minecraft MakeCode explains player position using the player’s feet as the moving reference point, while the Bedrock Script API describes a block’s own grid coordinate. Those are related but distinct locations.
For an ordinary full cube, when your feet are exactly at an integer Y value, the cube directly beneath you is usually one level lower. For example, feet at Y=64 generally means the supporting full block occupies Y=63. Your coordinate is not the label of the block you are standing on.
Why the displayed level can seem off
Partial-height blocks
Slabs, stairs, and other non-full-height shapes can put your feet at a fractional vertical position. In those cases, do not rely on the simple one-level offset as a universal rule. Check the particular block and the coordinate display.

Player coordinates versus a block’s coordinates
If you need to know which block occupies a specific grid location—for building or a command—use that block’s coordinate rather than treating your player coordinate as the support block’s label. Microsoft’s Bedrock Script API defines the Y coordinate as the block’s own vertical location and describes moving above a block as moving in the positive Y direction: Microsoft Learn: Block class.
How to display your coordinates
- Java Edition: Press F3 to open the debug screen and view X, Y, and Z coordinates.
- Bedrock Edition: Enable View Coordinates in the game settings.
These display instructions are documented by the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki’s tutorial on measuring distance. The exact interface can vary by version or platform.

Is Y measured at eye level?
No: the player-feet reference described in Minecraft MakeCode is not the player’s eye position. The coordinate follows the player’s position from the feet, not the block directly below and not eye height. See Minecraft MakeCode’s explanation of positions and its coordinates overview.
