No—there is no free full version of Animal Crossing: New Horizons in Nintendo’s official listings. The game’s version 3.0 update is free, but only for people who already own the game. Nintendo’s mobile game, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete, is also paid. A few free downloads and optional expansion access can be confusing, but none makes the full Switch game free.

Why the free update does not mean the game is free
A game update modifies a copy of the game you already have; it is not a free copy of the base game. Nintendo describes version 3.0 as a free update for New Horizons players, so you must own New Horizons to use it. The update adds features and activities, but does not remove the purchase requirement for the Switch game.
Is Pocket Camp Complete a free mobile alternative?
No. Pocket Camp Complete is a paid smart-device app, not a free-to-play version of New Horizons. Nintendo says buying the app gives access to previously released content without additional in-game purchases. Its 2024 announcement also described a selection of over 10,000 items; that figure describes the app’s item selection, not a free offer. The announcement does not establish today’s price in every app store or country, so check your local storefront.
Does Happy Home Paradise let you play New Horizons for free?
No. Happy Home Paradise is downloadable content for New Horizons, not a substitute for the base game. Nintendo Support lists two ways to access the expansion: buy it separately through the eShop or use it while an eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is active. Either way, you need the full New Horizons game. Membership access is conditional and temporary, rather than ownership of the expansion.

How to check whether a Nintendo listing is the full game
Nintendo’s store can list free downloads, tools, and member-exclusive content alongside the paid game. Before downloading or assuming an offer is a free game, check the product title and description: the listing should identify Animal Crossing: New Horizons itself if it is the full Switch game. An item page or transfer tool is a companion download, not the game.
If you are comparing official options, first decide whether you want the Switch game or a mobile app. Then check whether the listing is the base game, an update, an expansion, or a separate app—and whether it depends on an active subscription. Prices and availability vary by region, so confirm those details in your local Nintendo eShop or app store.
