Yes. On PC, use resetAI for a visible NPC whose behavior is stuck. If an NPC is missing, target the existing actor by RefID and use moveto player. A dead NPC requires a resurrection command, which can affect the actor and inventory differently—and may not repair quest state.
Choose the fix that matches what happened
| Problem | PC console approach | What it changes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| NPC is present but frozen, unresponsive, or stuck in combat behavior | Select the NPC and enter resetAI. |
Resets AI behavior. | Does not generally rewind inventory or quest progress. The NPC must be visible and selectable. |
| NPC is missing or unreachable | Target the existing actor with prid <RefID>, then enter moveto player. |
Moves that actor to the player. | Use the placed actor’s RefID, not its archetype BaseID. Creating a new copy is not the same as recovering the existing one. |
| NPC is dead | Use a resurrection command only after deciding whether to revive the existing actor or create a fresh copy. | Changes the actor’s life state; the command variant affects inventory behavior. | Quest objectives or dialogue may still consider the NPC dead. |
These commands and targeting steps apply to Skyrim’s PC debug console. The cited command guides do not establish an equivalent command interface on PlayStation or Xbox.
Reset a visible NPC’s behavior
- Make a manual save before trying actor-changing commands, particularly in a modded game.
- On PC, open the in-game console and click the NPC so the actor is selected.
- Enter
resetAIand press Enter, then close the console and check whether the NPC resumes normal behavior.
This is the low-impact first step for behavior problems such as a follower stuck in an animation or combat stance, an unresponsive follower, or broken NPC behavior. It resets AI; it is not a general reset of the NPC’s inventory, quest flags, or progress. The Nexus Mods community guide describes ResetAI as an all-purpose NPC fix, while a Steam Community command guide also describes it as resetting an NPC’s AI.
Bring a missing NPC to you without making a duplicate
To recover an existing actor, you need that actor’s RefID—the identifier for the particular placed instance. A BaseID identifies the actor’s default archetype, not the existing instance you are trying to move.

- Find the NPC’s RefID in a reliable Skyrim NPC reference list.
- Open the PC console and enter
prid <RefID>, replacing<RefID>with the actual identifier. - Enter
moveto playerto move the selected actor to your location.
If the NPC is visible, clicking the actor in the console can select it instead of using prid. Do not use player.placeatme <BaseID> as a missing-NPC recovery method: it creates a new instance and can leave you with both the original and a duplicate. The Nexus Mods command guide explicitly distinguishes this from teleporting an existing NPC.
Resurrect a dead NPC carefully
Resurrection is not the same as resetting an NPC. Command references distinguish between resurrect 1, which revives the existing actor, and the default resurrect (also written resurrect 0), which is described as removing the target and creating a new copy with its original spawned inventory. That distinction matters if you want to preserve the existing actor and its inventory. The inventory behavior is documented in the secondary reference Resurrect Console Command Help.

Even if the actor returns, quest dialogue or objectives may still treat that NPC as dead. The Steam Community command guide warns of this mismatch. Avoid treating resurrection as a guaranteed quest repair.

Do not escalate blindly to commands such as disable, recycleactor, or broad quest resets. General command references do not promise that these restore quest flags or scripted scenes. Identify the NPC, the quest, your Skyrim edition, and any relevant mods before looking for a quest-specific fix.

Mod-specific reset tools need their own caution. The AFT SE AE user manual treats its follower-mod reset feature as a last resort and warns it may corrupt a save. That warning applies to AFT’s reset procedure; it is not evidence that the ordinary resetAI command carries the same risk.
